Hello poker fans,

I am a casual player but will still will share my experience with you, in an attempt to answer your question.

Cash games and multi-table tournaments are different in the size of the field and the fact that you can rebuy and add on as much as you can in a cash game as opposed to the MTT structure which must end in a clear winner.

All the basic skills that you use for poker is needed in both games;
  • your knowledge of position
  • calculating your odds and outs
  • various play strategies, check raises, 3-bets, stop and go etc.
  • learning the players at the tables etc.
What I believe is different is;
  • various stages in MTTs require changes in strategy - early, middle, late (bubble, in-the-money and final table play)
  • bank roll management - (I think it is 100:1 for Tournament and 1000:1 for cash games. Subject to correction)
  • your bet sizing to some extent
  • your play and level of aggression
Many players are willing to float and semi-bluff with larger bets. This makes cash game a bit more swingy and one may experience more variance. Players also tend to play a wider range of starting hands and are not as tight as MTTs. So,you go up against more suited connectors and mid range cards than in tournament poker.

If you are a good cash game player, poker can be very profitable in the short term but in tournament poker one can go a while without landing a deep run and final tables may be few and far between.

Of course, with online poker, the lines are now blurry. This is as a result of the rebuy periods that go on for 1-2 hours in MTT these days, as well as the rebuy and add-on tourneys. It takes quite a bit of discipline to avoid firing too many bullets in an MTT. One may have to bail out if the tournament is becoming a shove fest near to the end of the late registration period. This poker environment requires an adjustment in strategy and a double portion of restraint, as villain is often willing to take an unfavourable shove and get lucky in MTTs with today's more forgiving tournament structure.

I play mostly micro-MTTs because of the size of my bankroll but do enjoy the thrill of the cash game every now and then.

Hope my answer cleared up something for you. Both games are fun but just be aware of the adjustments and most importantly play within your bankroll. I am happy to say that I will never go broke playing online poker and I have made more money than I ever expected. Right now, I am just lying in wait for my big score but enjoying the min cashes, deep runs and overall victories in the micro - pool still. It is only a matter of time to win a free $109 ticket or satalite to enter a huge tournament and do well.

Do you play both?

Skills that transfer well from cash games to tournaments include:
Positional play – knowing when and from which position to bet or raise.
Reading opponents – noticing behaviors and tendencies to predict their actions.
Stack and bankroll management – controlling bet sizes and preserving chips.
odds and probability analysis – calculating pot odds and expected value works in tournaments too, especially in the early stages.
Decision-making under pressure – cash games train you to make quick, correct decisions, which is crucial when blinds increase and stacks get shorter in tournaments.

Its probably easier to say, what does NOT transfer well. And basically its two things:

1) The idea of outlasting other players to secure payjumps (AKA ICM) is obviously not relevant for cash games.
2) Playing well with a short stack is far more important in tournaments, and playing well with a deep stack is more important in cash games.

I think bluff selection transfers really well. Understanding blockers, board texture, range advantage, that’s poker fundamentals, not format-specific. If you know why you’re bluffing, you’ll do fine in both. What doesn’t transfer perfectly is thin value. In cash you can go for razor-thin value because stacks are deep and ranges wider. In MTTs, especially near bubbles or pay jumps, people call tighter and dynamics shift

First of all range knowledge. If you have playes a lot of hands, you have an idea of what the others might have or not. Second of all the bold nature, having the guts to call someone All-In with AJ.
What does not transfer is patience that you hve to bring to a table and the confrontation with pro players who are consequently raising and you don't know if they are bluffing because they do it only every fifth time and are willing to risk it all having an open straight draw with turn and river to come. Plus, there are always nine seats instead of six and every tournament lasts at least 3-5 hours if you want to make it to the top 50.
