SnGs Strategy

I like to play SnGs, Holdem more than any other game. However, with the hundreds of games I play: mostly play money and micro, I dont appear to be improving my game at all. Bummer.

I am relatively intelligent but, cant seem to get a grip on the game. If I play long period, inevitable I will come out losing.

If anyone has suggestions, please let me know. I will keep at the play money tables until my luck changes, or I get the hang of it. lol

Are you all in early or usually just blind out? Maybe you are waiting for hands or trying to make it

Probably the biggest error made in Sng's is 'playing too many hands'.

If you're into reading books, I would guarantee that you will become a winning player (in micro buyins) simply by reading & studying Collin Moshmann's SNG Strategy book.

If you're playing full ring, play tight, especially early position, until it becomes six handed and loosen up as more players drop out.

The temptation is to play a lot of hands while the blinds are low, but they go up fairly quickly in these and you could just chip down and not be able to play when the blinds are really worth it.

The Sng's on Stars are full of Regs playing multitables so if you are planning to play them get a Hud..Your going to need all the help you can get.

Sng Strategy

Hey fordman,

Thanks for taking time out to answer my message. After reading the replies to my post about playing SNGs, I find myself guilty of many suggestions posted in these replys.

To answer your question, I do not go all in early. Even if I have a good hand. Reason being, dont want to be knocked out early.

As a general rule, I wait for a good hand and will blind out, hoping for a break.
And, hoping that the card will start running for me.

I guess I wait for the other players to knock each other out. lol

Hey Steveiam,

You said one thing right, I need all the help I can get. lol.

I can't play for real money on PS, as you know, since I live in the good old US of A. But, can play the play money games, which I do.

I don't know what Regs of Hud.. meand. Sorry to be so dumb. Maybe you can give me more information on this. As, I am very interested in learning.

Hey Dasher,

I do tend to play lots of hands early on when the blinds are low. Theory being, the hope that I can get a good hand cheaply. Yes, that may be one of my mistakes.

Once in a while, I will double up and get a big stack early. Then, I will play no hands until the other players knock each other out.

One game where I like, and play very tight is the double or nothing. I usually play the $1.00 and $2.00 games. Other day I played in one $10.00 game and in a ten player table. And, some times the $5.00 ones. Could not hit any cards and got knocked out in 6th positions, altho, I had several chances to make it to the 5th position, but lady luck was not with me.

I am running short on the bank roll now, so have to play the dollar games again. And, hope to build up bank roll again. Otherwise, its back to the play money.

A few things:

In normal SNGs, play TAG early, not just tight. The idea is to get solid value from the hands you do play since you want to be at least a mid-stack when you reach the middle stage.

Don't be afraid to get knocked out early. When you don't cash, it's irrelevant what position you bust in.

You might want to stop playing for playchips. Opponents who have nothing on the line aren't going to think / play the same as those who have even a micro-buyin invested.

Also, avoid DoNs until you have a decent idea of how you should adapt your game when playing them. And even then, it's probably better not to mix game types at the same time.

Lots of Freerolls available through Cardschat once you become eligible.

I enjoy and have better winning stats at the Double or Nothings and the Triple Up One Table SnGs. Also play HU alot.

What type of Sit And Go's do you play? And what are the blinds? In regular blind levels at full ring, play pretty tight. I would myself go all in with any pocket pair above sevens, AK, AQ, AJ (suited), and KQ (suited) hoping for the double up. You could shove in A10 and A9 (suited) as well as KQ (offsuit). Most people will call with ace seven and higher, any pocket pair, king queen and some will call with worse hands. Against this range, you win about 60% of the time. You might also want to improve four handed to heads up play where the money is.

Important thing is to be patient and wait. Dont lose your courage, when you are with 1300 chips when the first player has 18k or something. He has taken a lot of risks to get to there, which for you is good news, since in mid to late game he must only make one, which will cost him the tournament. You need to play only premium hands and calculate pot odds, outs when neccessarily. You need to play strong hands because most of the times you enter a pot, it will come to put your whole stack in the middle, which you wouldnt want to do with 2 7 off suit. When you have a real hand you need to be very aggressive. If you get an AA,KK,QQ,AK early you need to be very aggressive. With AK you need to raise a lot, where with the rest of the hands you dont want to slowplay it, but if you want you need to raise by that much that it wouldnt be profitable for people to play hands like 68s and such, because every single hand, that is dealt, someone flops a monster hand. But he cant know that he would have made a Full house with 2 7 for example. Thats why you need to raise when you play, and raise big, so people with not that strong hands dont find it a good spot to pay. Early you need to play premium hands, meaning pocketpairs (limping in that case, if you hit a set raise) AA,AK,KQ (thats not much of a strong hand, but Ive seen that its working pretty good for me. I didnt play it at the beginning, but now I tend to play it more than before ) KK, QQ. You can also play jacks by limping or all in but it is a very weak hand for all in situations.

Play Money on Full Tilt

Hey Kontus,

I have not played in the play money games on Full Tilt. However, thiink I will give it a try. Some how, I am fixed on PokerStars. Guess, it was from playing the TestPokerStars games.

Full Tilt was my 2nd best poker site after PS.

Keep on grinding. When I finished 1st place last nite in the 10,000 chip SNG with 27 players, it was a grind.
