This is more of a general hand analysis since I have been running into these situations quite a bit, so I recognize it is a leak since I don't seem to understand the situation as well as I should.

The hand type generally speaking:

Hero is dealt AQ (suited or offsuit)

Whether out of position or in position, hero opens a standard amount or probably 3bets if in position facing an open (Hero is on BTN). Otherwise out of position (SB, BB) should this be a 3bet? (If it is, it leads nicely into the next stage).

One way or another the result is that one villain calls and we see the flop:

:as4::5h4::9c4:

We have top pair second best kicker.

OOP, Hero bets 1/3 or 1/2 and gets 3bet by villain (min 3bet or maybe slightly more). Hero calls.

On the turn:

:as4::5h4::9c4::7d4:

Still pretty dry, hero is going to check to pot control. Villain fires again for 1/2 pot.

At this point this feels exactly like TPSK vs. TPTK. Does hero continue or is there a point where we know this isn't going to end well in most cases? There's the possibility of sets, two pairs, one unlikely straight, but TPTK is what feels to be most likely.

Hopefully my questions make sense here and there's enough to give some general comments. If not I can try to put up some hands when they show up. I've gone to showdown in several spots like this before and it almost always does not end well for Hero. Sometimes Villain checks river setting up a trap to induce a jam, and whether or not Hero falls for it, the outcome is almost never good.

When you get raised on a board with no draws, its typically by 2 pair or sets, so yes at some point you can fold top pair second kicker or even top pair top kicker. AK should not be raising on that board, but if it is, its one more hand, AQ lose to. Once you have gotten raised and have called, you should typically not bet for value on later streets, unless you have improved. Just check back and get to showdown, where you will typically either lose or win against some random bluff, that decided to give up.
