Here I lost with a king full because the villain had a higher pair. I continued calling because there was no way for me to know if he actually hit the pair, as he didn't bet the flop (I would expect him to do so with the A). When should I have stopped playing this hand?

Preflop
Standard open.

Flop
Its fine to check back this hand for some pot control.

Turn
As played you opened the door for him to bluff, so you have to call at least this bet.

River
Now I think, you can fold though. You lose to an A or a J or the case K, and he is betting pretty large.

Conclusion
Hand strength is always relative, and with trips on the board having a "full house" is nothing special. The better way to think about this spot is, that you have third or fourth pair. So if you call here, you are basically never folding any pair.

Always ask yourself why someone would be giving you action on a particular board. Maybe sometimes you might find yourself up against a lower pair (77 and less) who also made the full house like you. Realistically speaking though, the ace, jack, and fourth king are also always in the range.

Everything fundiver says above.

At least in my 20+ year experience.....I'd only add couple other ways to know whether to get away/fold is by villains VPIP and win % at showdown or whatever GG's HUD calls that stat(can't remember off hand don't play there enough). If VPIP is low your pair 88's are not looking good and he isn't betting and calling with nothing when they have a low VPIP. If his showdown win % is high again clearly a sign your 88 isn't looking very good.

It maybe only 2nl the lowest stakes available but guys with a lower VPIP(then the pool avg) and a high win at showdown % don't bluff enough to make it worth the call the very times they do bluff.

Cheers!!!
