I can understand and resonate with your question. And me personally have had such sleepless nights where I was still playing even at 4:00AM (sleepless, ofc) chasing my losses. Gone are those days and I have changed a lot since then. 😌

PS: Those nights were really horrible and I still remember having to take day off from my work just to compensate my sleep time 🥲

When you say 3am, if the player in question had started playing at 2am, would he be considered a gambler still, if he kept playing?
Ofc, it would be a different story if you've said "If you have never chassed your losses after 8 hours of play..."

I agree with everyone who says that it's not about when you play, but how much you play that really matters. I know people who are in bed by 9 PM because that’s just their routine, and I know others who only start playing at that time and keep going until morning. That only tells you whether someone’s a night owl or not — nothing more.

What actually says something about a player’s potential problems is how much time they spend playing. But even that can be misleading, because if you’re playing long tournaments, it’s normal for them to last hours.

So maybe the best indicator of a problem is how much someone loses in a single day. That’s the real signal. Like, if you’re playing, you bust out of a tournament after hours, and then you register for another one just to keep going... yeah, that’s when you’ve probably got a problem.

That’s how I see it, anyway.

So what about those who are natural night owls? I might have won during some nights but I don't recall chasing losses. I must be very far from a gambler or do I get points for staying up late?

I don't think that we should necessarily be categorising people as gamblers, with either a postitve or negative connotation attached.

I don't categorise myself as a gambler, but cleary I do sometimes gamble.....

It feels important to explain the context of 'gambler' in this question, to me anyway!

For example, 'Can you even consider yourself as a proper big time drinker, if you've never ordered more shots at 3am'??

In reality and based on my personal experience, I saw that playing during midnight is very profitable as there are less NITS and more drunkyards. If you are regular to playing at midnight (night owl), you should be good. But I guess, the question is more relevant to people who chase their loss during day/ night till midnight. 😌

Well, that might depend on which geographical regions belong to same player pools. Another question is time zones. For example my 3 AM is just 9 PM in brazil so everything is relative in these questions. But as long as it works for me I'm good with it.

Live poker.

Rare situation but it has happened where I get felted and try to get my money back from a particular crazy player.

Having won my own money back I can feel victorious as I walk to the parking lot at 6 am. (y)

I would say that a real player is someone who has come a long way and experienced a wide variety of situations. I have lost my bankroll many times, I have often tried unsuccessfully to win it back, I have made many unnecessary moves, and given that I have been gambling for over 15 years, I definitely consider myself a gambler.

I dont think of myself as a gambler. I like to think of it as investing, you analyze the situation and make the best decision.

Games like slots have negative EV, so I do not play them.
