You said to yourself, "Risk! All or nothing..." - but the stakes were so high that you couldn't really afford it; it was clear that either this would turn out well and everything would be rosy afterward, or it would end badly and you'd be in deep shit!

Thankfully I only have to answer to myself, so I take pretty big risks...if it turns out bad I usually feel like crap for awhile but no one got hurt (except me) so it's easy to do it again.

I was at a casino once and decided to play blackjack. I started with $200 and turned it into $2K in less than half an hour at a $25 table.

While playing, behind me was the entrance to a nice room where I could see 3 Blackjack tables with only 2 or 3 players on each. I asked the dealer, and he said it's a VIP room with tables at $100 minimum. I looked at the black chips in front of me and thought, they're not mine after all, so why not go for it!

I got up with $2100 and went there. 20 min later or so, I left that room with $0.

It’s the same feeling as shoving all-in with a marginal hand—you don’t know if you’ll come out on top, but you commit anyway because backing down isn’t an option.

That mix of adrenaline, fear, and hope is brutal… but it’s also what makes the win so sweet when it does work out.
