roulette may be one of the simpliest games to play in the casino, but the math and the strategy behind it is far deeper than meets the eye. Today, we're going to explore the odds to roulette, how to reduce the house edge and various betting styles that exist to help you in your next roulette session!

🔍 What We’ll Cover:

  • Roulette Bets
  • Math Behind Roulette

💥 Roulette Bets

Roulette is a very simple game - you place your chips down to bet on a number, set of numbers, color, or whether the number will be odd or even. A wheel is spun, a ball drops into a slot and money is paid out if the number in that slot matches your bet selection(s) from the betting board.

Example of an European Roulette betting board

Types of Bets

There are several different bets and bet combinations that you can play in Roulette. Note that some casinos have different rules for certain betting combinations, and the bets that you can place are broken down into two groups:
  • Inside: Bets on specific numbers as they are orientated on the table:
    The inside bets are:
Single Number - Betting on only one number - ex, Black 17. Chips must be placed within the number and not touch any border.
Pairs - Betting on two numbers that share a border - ex, Black 11 and Red 12. Chips must be placed on the border shared between the two numbers
Triples - Betting on a column of numbers, ex: Red 1, Black 2, Red 3. Chips must be placed on the outer border of the column - so if you were trying to bet on 1, 2, and 3, chips should be placed on either the left side of Red 1, or the right side of Red 3. The key is to ensure the chips straddle the outside number to show you are betting those 3
Boxes - Betting on a group of 4 numbers ex: Red 16, Black 17, Red 19, Black 20. Chips must be placed on the intersection of the four numbers, and partially covering each one.
Fives - Only applicable to American Roulette, this is a bet on the top 5 numbers on the board - 0, 00, Red 1, Black 2, Red 3. Chips must be placed so that it partially covers the border between either 0 and Red 1, or 00 and Red 3 AND be half outside of the boxes on the board. This is to ensure you aren't placing a pair bet, but rather all 5 numbers.
Sixes - Bets that cover 6 numbers in 2 columns on the board, ex: Black 22, Red 23, Black 24, Red 25, Black 26, Red 27. Chips must be placed over the outer edge of the two outside numbers, and partially outside of the boxes on the board, again to indicate you aren't placing a pair bet.
  • Outside: Bets on specific groups of numbers - red, even, the first 12, etc. Outside bets include:
Rows - Bets that account for a row of numbers, ex 1, 4, 7, 10, etc. These bets are placed in the row you wish to bet over the "2 to 1" marking at the end of the row
Twelves - Bets that cover either the first 12 numbers; the second 12 numbers; or the last 12 numbers. Bets are placed in the applicable section titled "1st 12", "2nd 12", or "3rd 12"
Eighteens - Bets that cover either the first 18 numbers, or the second 18 numbers. Bets are placed on the applicable section titled "1st 18" or "2nd 18"
Even or Odd - Bets that cover all of the even or odd numbers on the board - this excludes the 0 or 00. Bets are placed in the section titled "Even" or "Odd"
Red or Black - Bets that cover all of the red numbers or all of the black numbers on the board. Bets are placed in the section colored red or black
Some casinos will force you to bet the minimum when you play, but apply this to inside and outside bets differently:
  • Inside bet minimums apply to ALL INSIDE bets you place.
Example: A $5 minimum inside bet means you have to bet a total of $5 on inside bets - this could be made up however you want, but once bets are closed, you have to have at least $5 on all inside bets you placed in order to qualify.
  • Outside bet minimums apply to EACH bet you place.
    Example:
A $5 minimum rule on outside bet means that you have to bet at least $5 on everything you wish to cover. That means each outside bet you make must be $5 or more.
In other casinos, they may have published minimum bets for the inside and the outside where the outside minimums are higher than that of the inside numbers. Regardless, you need to read and understand what the betting rules are before putting your first chips down.

There are multiple approaches to betting in roulette.
Some pick their favorite number and bet that hard; others spread their bets between inside and outside bets, while still others will try and maximize their coverage of the board by betting most, but not all, outside bets to try and get profitable. We'll walk through various approaches to attempt to be profitable in the next part of this series, but first - let's break down the math.

💥 Math Behind Roulette

Knowing the math and the long term expected return is key to betting roulette. The table below will show the individual bets available; what the odds are if that bet pays, and what the profit and loss is if you simulated every number on the wheel hitting once. So for the American Roulette table, the last column will give the profit and loss over 38 spins, assuming each space hits once. We'll also assume a $5 bet

American Roulette - 1 to 36 plus 0 and 00
Bet TypeExamplesOdds to HitOdds to PayoutProfit on 38 Spins
Single Number1738 to 135 to 1-$10.00
Two Numbers2 and 319 to 117 to 1-$10.00
Three Numbers1, 2, 338 to 311 to 1-$10.00
Four Numbers19, 20, 22, 2319 to 28 to 1-$10.00
Five Numbers0, 00, 1, 2, 338 to 56 to 1-$15.00
Six Numbers31 to 3619 to 35 to 1-$10.00
Twelve NumbersFirst 12 Numbers
A Column
19 to 62 to 1-$10.00
Eighteen Numbers1 to 18
Odd
Red
19 to 91 to 1-$10.00

Note that if every number hit at the same frequency as every other number on the table, that you should expect to lose 2 bets for every 38 spins of the
wheel. You'll also notice that the 5 bet, unique to American Roullette, is actually a bigger loser long term than the others.

European Roulette -1 to 36 plus 0
Bet TypeExamplesOdds to HitOdds to PayoutProfit on 37 Spins
Single Number1737 to 135 to 1-$5.00
Two Numbers2 and 337 to 217 to 1-$5.00
Three Numbers1, 2, 337 to 311 to 1-$5.00
Four Numbers19, 20, 22, 2337 to 48 to 1-$5.00
Six Numbers31 to 3637 to 65 to 1-$5.00
Twelve NumbersFirst 12 Numbers
A Column
37 to 122 to 1-$5.00
Eighteen Numbers1 to 18
Odd
Red
37 to 181 to 1-$5.00
Playing the European version dramatically improves your long term odds by expecting to lose 1 bet per 37 spins. This makes two large assumptions though - that the numbers hit on an equal frequency with each other, and you don't alter your betting pattern which we're going to explore next.

🎯 Summary

This is one of the most popular casinos games today, simply because of how easy it is for a beginner to walk up to a table, pick a number, and potentially win. Like most casino games though, the number of variations out there - game variations, betting limits and restrictions, etc, make choosing your game critical, along with how you choose to make your wagers. Be mindful of your gambling habits, and the size of your bankroll for your next roulette session!

That clarifies many things Chris, thank you. Because as simple as Roulette might appear, it's not that easy for a beginner to apply a somewhat profitable strategy. But the "Math behind it" section, the one I liked most ;), is a real guide to profit from.

I don't have much experience with Roulette myself except betting on Red/Black or Odd/Even a few times. So unfortunately, I have nothing useful to share.

I don't see how I could apply any effective strategy to this game when it comes to choosing the numbers on the board
Maybe play just the 50/50 options (odd/even, black/red) and tweak my bets.

I don't have a strategy for playing roulette, but I do have one very important rule. I don't spend more than I planned to spend in advance :)
Thank you for the interesting and useful information. It's good food for thought :)

Surprisingly there are a bunch of betting strategies designed to maximize your profits at the roulette table, assuming you have the bankroll for them. For as you'll see next, some require a LOT of money to be profitable and do carry risk of going totally bust.

Cool. I never thought there were so many nuances. I usually play “randomly,” betting as my intuition tells me, and in most cases I lose. Although, of course, there have been a few decent wins. But I think now, with the knowledge I've gained, I'll be able to improve my game :)

Yup, that came clear when doing research on casino.us after Tammy's first roulette post.
But even then the bets revolve mainly around odd/even & black/red. Bond can play as he pleases.

How complicated everything is :)
All this information is certainly useful, but too complicated for me. When it comes to roulette, I prefer to play for fun and don't want to complicate my life :)
I think it's simply unrealistic to become a profitable roulette player. There is no strategy that would generate profits on a regular basis. But I admit that there are quite adequate strategies that can minimize losses.

I have a question here... All bets are made considering how the numbers are shown on the table.
Long time I dont play roulette, but I was thinking of playing the wheel instead of the table, not sure if I am letting everyone understand what I wanna say.

I know probability of hitting a number is the same, but if I play the wheel and play 6 continous numbers, wouldnt it be like 1/6 instead of 1/6+1/6+1/6... 6 times?

For me, roulette is primarily a game of intuition. Of course, you can play using a strategy, and it is quite possible that this strategy will make you a more profitable player, but then it will be less of a game and more like work. The main thing is that the game brings you joy, and then you will have a real chance of making a good profit.

Certainly the bank's advantage is intimidating. Obviously, the bank doesn't play to loose & the best odds of winning something is to focus on the outside bets. Let's see what happens. :)

Roulette seems simple, but behind the spinning ball lies pure mathematics and strategy. You just have to choose a style that suits your risk tolerance.

All strategies seem to offer some kind of advantage to the player. I have never played roulette; the few times I have played, I have bet on 50/50 options such as black or red. From what I saw in a documentary, adding 0 to the roulette wheel, and in some cases also the double 0, has tipped the balance in favor of the house. So I'm not interested in playing.

It seems better to play roulette in Europe than in the U.S.
I usually bet once a week on black or red—choosing the color that didn’t come last—and I get a free ticket to a poker tournament.
I’m not sure why, but as far as I remember, I win most of the time.

💬 How Do You Play Roulette?

What are your favorite betting strategies while playing roulette? Share them below and let us know what works for you - and what doesn't!
No matter the betting style, roulette probabilities remain unchanged because each spin is independent and the house edge is constant. What strategies actually modify is our perception of the game: some increase volatility, others reduce it, but none can alter the long‑term expected value. In other words, the style affects the experience, not the underlying mathematics. We can say that there is no actual winning strategy in roulette, only the player’s impression that certain patterns or systems might influence the outcome. In reality, the probabilities remain fixed, and any strategy creates only a sense of control, not a mathematical advantage.

Its a neg EV game, even if you had the bankroll to do some of the strategies, its no guarantee that the casino will let you.

For example if you more than double your bet every time, the casino can just cut you off. Its like in BJ when you bet small and then change your bet to a much larger size, they may think you are counting cards.

Excellent explanation, but it's really sad to know that no matter how hard you try, the EV is still negative. =/

But once we're aware of this and know the basics of the math presented, we can minimize this effect... get close to breakeven or even beat the house when luck is on our side.

The types of bets seem quite intuitive to learn, but still full of details that are important to pay attention to.

I played my first roulette game recently and, as I predicted, I didn't do very well! rs

hi folks,

i recommend to play 2-4 bets per play, i would never make 3 bets on specific numbers but 2 inside bets and 2 outside bets are a good combination.
For example: inside: lets take 2 boxes or Sixes and outside: a row + 2nd 12 or red/black + 2nd 18.
I had good results with these tactics on a special run.

The part that says the EV of American roulette = -5.4% and the EV of European roulette = -2.7% is missing. In other words, it's impossible to win at this game in the long run.

I play in a completely random, intuitive way. I don't have a clear strategy. The main thing, in my opinion, is not to exceed your limit. And most importantly, always have that limit, because without it you can find yourself in trouble.
