The human-like robot known as North, created by Sharpa, an AI robotics company based out of Singapore, demonstrated its ability to deal blackjack (North displayed other 'tricks')at the CES (Corporate Electronics Show) in Las Vegas this week. Videos began circulating on all social media platforms, naturally prompting both favourable and unfavourable comments.

The link below has a short video of 'North' in action as he deals blackjack.

Do you think AI robotics may replace humans in a casino setting in the future?

😮 I think this is a great example of just because you can do something it doesn't mean you should do something,

I don't go to the casino much but when I go I don't want some giant slow motion robot dealing blackjack to me,

hire a real person, thanks👍

This is not a huge advance, they're just putting together a bunch of already-existing technology to handle a slightly different application. Machine vision and AI applications are already all over the place in automated manufacturing.

For now, I think Blackjack dealers have nothing to worry about. Who wants to sit in front of a machine like that and play 3 hands an hour?
But in the future, and it could be sooner than we think, those robots will certainly improve!

Nice demo! I’m curious—does the robot actually shuffle the cards as well, or is that still handled separately?

I recently watched a video about a shuffler machine that was hacked because it had an internal camera meant to verify that all cards were present. Hackers were able to use that camera feed to determine the exact card order coming out of the machine—and in could even program a desired sequence.

It makes me wonder whether a dealing robot like this could also be hacked in a similar way. With all the tech involved, there’s always the question of what vulnerabilities might be hiding under the hood.

But yes, it's just a matter of time until dealers will be replaced by robots.

I don't mind... as long as the House doesn't mind when I replace myself with a robot... one that can maintain optimal strategy without exhaustion and count cards at the same time
