We all love dreaming about Royal Flushes and monster hands, but poker quickly teaches you a different lesson. Most of the time, you’re not dealt perfection — you’re dealt something average. A small pair, a marginal hand, or sometimes complete trash. And honestly, that’s where real poker begins.

Winning at poker isn’t about waiting for perfect cards or miracle hands. It’s about knowing how to play what you’re actually dealt: reading the table, understanding your opponents, managing your chips, and staying patient when the cards refuse to cooperate.

A Royal Flush is so rare that if you wait for it, your coffee gets cold, your tea gets cold, and sometimes the table closes before it shows up 😅 Most sessions are built on small decisions with average hands, not on fantasy scenarios.

So what about you? Do you usually wait for big hands, or have you learned how to squeeze value from average cards? Any funny stories where a “nothing hand” turned into a surprising win?

There are countless stories of junk bringing victory. Poker is a game that depends heavily on luck. Sometimes even bingo players can be winners despite their lack of skill and experience.

You play by thinking in terms of ranges, position, pot size, and opponent type, not whether the hand looks pretty.
You just need to know when to bet, when to control the pot, and when to walk away.

Waiting for monsters feels safe, but it’s usually just another way of bleeding blinds and missing opportunities. Learning how to stay patient, read tendencies, and make good decisions with average holdings is where the real edge lives. That’s also where the mental game matters most, because it’s easy to get frustrated when the deck won’t cooperate.

In poker, one of the fastest ways to lose is to play the hand you wish you had instead of the one actually in front of you. Chasing miracle cards, forcing bluffs that don’t fit the board, or refusing to fold because “it could get there” turns skill into hope—and hope is not a strategy. The best players accept reality instantly and make the most profitable decision with the information they have right now.

Medium-sized hands are generally the ones with the most chips. They will defeat AK, AQ, AJ, KQ and make you rich.

The detail is to know when and how to play those average hands. In the UTG region it is almost impossible.

Sometimes, I have entered with whatever comes, sometimes I have won, most of the time I haven't, when I realize that my bankrol was diminishing a lot, so the best thing is to wait for regular or good hands to enter the game, or maybe it depends on the luck of each person.

Let's add that it matters what you play! Cash or competitive? In both cases, if you have already developed your respect, you do not always have to force only the premium cards.

If you only play with strong cards, the players at the table understand this and always fold to your raises. You should always be able to play with any pocket hands.

I used to be way too tight, just waiting around for something strong, and it felt safe but also pretty unprofitable. Once I started opening up and paying more attention to position and player tendencies, those “average” hands started becoming opportunities instead of headaches.

One of my favorite moments was winning a decent pot with what was basically air because the board texture made more sense for my range than my opponent’s. Nothing special card-wise, but everything lined up strategically. That kind of win feels better than hitting a monster sometimes because you know you earned it.

If you sit around waiting for a Royal Flush, you’ll be there until the dealer retires. Most of the money is made grinding with boring hands, small edges, and good reads. Top pair with a weak kicker, middle pair on a messy board, even the occasional bluff when the story makes sense. That’s the real game.

Honestly, the players who only play monsters are the easiest ones at the table. You always know where you’re at against them. The fun is turning something like 7-5 suited into a problem for everyone else.

One of my favorites was winning a decent pot with absolute garbage. Missed the flop completely, but the board came out scary enough that nobody wanted to continue. Fired once, then again on the turn, and suddenly everyone remembered they had errands to run.

The dealer decides what hands you get dealt, you can only do the best with what you have ..and often that is just throwing it away:)

If I played, I definitely wouldn’t be sitting around waiting only for premiums, that’s a slow bleed in most games.
The real money comes from playing solid ranges preflop and then outplaying people postflop, especially when they’re as showdown-happy as the pool you described.

Good morning everyone,

Poker is an extremely difficult and complex game. There is no magic formula to win. In my opinion, it is essential to develop different strategies for each stake level.

At the micro stakes, playing a more value-oriented strategy is already enough to be profitable. As you move up in stakes, the game becomes increasingly complex and challenging.

It is crucial to know how to play according to the board. And, surprisingly, sometimes making plays that represent a recreational player can be effective — not always, but in specific situations.

I’ve noticed that the most profitable players tend to be very aggressive. It’s not just about playing the cards you are dealt, but rather the range you represent.

Example: I open pocket 8s (88) with 30bb, the big blind defends, and the flop comes T♣ A♠ 2♦ (with a 6♠ on the turn). On this type of board, I have a range advantage, so I don’t mind applying three barrels (triple barrel).
