I can remember playing with a player for the first time.

He kept raising with junk and then getting there on the river for 2 pair or some double gap straight that I could not see.

I really hated him for beating me at that table.

As I played with him more on different days I realized that he was just lucky that day and while he was a good player - he had cracks in his armor.

Eventually we became friendly and I cracked his AA the last time we played holdem.

Has this happened to you live or online?

Not yet, but rivalry is born at the table, and respect is earned over time.

I’ve had that exact experience, especially online. Someone runs hot, plays what looks like total nonsense, and keeps getting there in spots that feel impossible. It’s frustrating in the moment and easy to label them as bad or reckless.

Over time, the picture usually evens out. You start to see where the leaks actually are when they overextend, chase too wide, or rely too much on variance. That’s when patience pays off.

Funny how the players you hate most at first often end up being the most profitable matchups once the cards stop running one way.

Sometimes I get annoyed by a player's aggressive style, but I haven't become friends with any of them yet.

You talk away from the table.
You realize they’re battling the same variance.
You see they’re not disrespectful—just different.
Or you discover the thing you hated was actually discipline, patience, or a style that counters yours.

The question you asked is clear and simple. If you want, I can help you understand it.

There is an interesting story about prejudice! The more you meet someone, the more likeable they become, and the less prejudice they have. Obviously this is an extreme view and only 80% true :)

Yes, that has happened to me too.
At first I really disliked a player because of his strange, loose style playing junk hands and still getting there. It felt like pure luck and bad poker.

Over time, after playing more sessions together, I realized he wasn’t disrespectful, just different. Like everyone else, he had leaks too. Once I stopped reacting emotionally and started seeing the bigger picture, my opinion completely changed.

Funny enough, some of the players you dislike the most at first can later turn into decent poker friends.

This happens to me all the time. I would say, without exaggeration, that 75% of my opponents are just lucky donkeys. But I'm used to it. And of course lucky donkeys aren't really that bad people :)

No. I've never hated a player and then become friends with them. It's good that I've never had that unpleasant experience. Besides, for me, since poker is a mental sport, things should be kept well separate from personal matters.

I have never felt hatred towards players at the poker table. The point is that I can only admire the game of those who were able to deceive me. Yes, I can throw emojis in online poker, but this is only to pressure the player psychologically (but I do this extremely rarely). :)

This hasn't happened to me yet, but it's a great situation that shows all the variance in poker and that even when playing correctly, sometimes our cards don't turn out the way they do.
