Listen to music, make food, walk on the street, play games at work, in short, is it possible to perform well in the game while performing other everyday tasks? I usually play games on my tablet while walking home from work and I've had good results.

I think that all the hobbies you mentioned above are very, very poorly combined with poker (except maybe listening to music, but even that is not for everyone).

ActivityWhat it involvesImpact on poker performance
CookingReal-world decision-making + divided attentionTiming errors, poorer opponent reading, mistakes in complex spots
Walking on the streetPhysical movement + constant environmental stimuliRushed decisions, distractions, lower strategic accuracy
Playing video games simultaneouslyHigh cognitive load + rapid focus switchingLoss of concentration, worse hand analysis, more mistakes
Working in parallelDemanding cognitive tasks + true multitaskingMental fatigue, poor automatic decisions, reduced edge

Well... This works well for me, but I don't think it's applicable to most players.

I usually perform better when I'm doing other things during the game. This helps me make decisions in a simplified way...
Obviously, there are situations where we need extra attention... In that case, I turn my attention to that specific screen or game.

Playing multiple screens can also fill this gap, which doesn't necessarily mean we're doing any other activity.

This should be something very personal, and everyone should have a different way of responding to external stimuli.

It will also depend on the parallel activity we are doing...

But in general, for me, doing other activities while I'm playing usually helps, even if there is some divergence in focus.

I usually play poker, study, and manage my projects without any problems. I also listen to music and interact with friends and colleagues. In the world we live in today, we need to learn to multitask; it's a requirement of our daily lives.

The impact is just a matter of degree.

I dont think you can play your "A" game on autopilot.

You can't do well if you're doing other things while playing poker. If you're not focused on the game, you won't be able to win.

Is it possible to perform well doing other things while playing?

I guess everything is possible and I know people that do well results wise playing poker like this - mostly listening to music/watching something on YT etc. (some even say that they just can't do efficiently 1 thing only...); but like other members said above, most of the time and for most people- this isn't a good idea as the general population can't perform at the top of their abilities when multitasking, especially with such a complex or attention demanding game like poker...

I think this can work if most if not all of the other players at the table are also multitasking, so no one is paying any close attention to tells or leaks. Not a good idea to multitask if you're in any kind of high stakes game.

You’re a genius if you’ve had good results multitasking!
But in the long run if you wish to be a cut above the rest and reach the elite group, then only a quite room with just the game screen in front of you is the ideal way of playing!

Depends on what you define as "well". Everything outside of paying attention to the game reduces your ability to make the best decisions. I look for the party tables at poker rooms because they have the most people not paying attention.

I think my chances are low if I get distracted by something else. Usually I just listen to music while playing poker, and more rarely I watch a movie or a TV series.

Playing poker and listening to music is possible. Otherwise, your attention and concentration take a back seat.

It's completely realistic. For me, poker is a hobby that brings me pleasure. It doesn't cause me any problems.

People often think you have to be fully locked in to perform well while playing but that’s not always true. With enough practice, many skills become almost automatic. Whether it’s gaming, sports, or music, your brain learns patterns so well that you can hold a conversation, think ahead, or even relax mentally while still performing at a high level.

That said, it depends on the situation. High-pressure moments or new challenges still demand full focus. But during familiar routines, your “autopilot” can take over, letting you balance performance with other activities.

In the end, it’s all about experience and awareness knowing when you can split your attention, and when you need to lock back in.
