I honestly think that for decades, poker has existed in a curious duality. Under most international law, it's considered a game of chance. However, those who play it professionally know that, in the long run, luck is only a secondary factor. What are your thoughts on this? 🤔

Poker & sport should never be used in a sentence that does not include the words, is not a, ie. poker is not a sport.

I honestly think calling poker a 'game of chance' is something only people who have never studied a range would say. To me, it’s a mental sport. Sure, you can't control the deck, but you can control your decisions, your bankroll, and how you exploit your opponents. If it were just luck, you wouldn't see the same faces at the final tables year after year

The Real Answer: It’s Both, Poker is a skill game played through a mechanism of chance.
Luck determines: The cards you receive, Short-term swings
Skill determines: How you respond, How much value you extract, Whether you survive variance
In other words, Luck determines what happens to you, Skill determines how you respond to it.

It's a game of math and psychology. And of course a little luck never hurts.

Poker is a mental sport. Game of the mind and with the mind. What prevails is strategic skill over luck in the long term. Although the cards are distributed randomly, the final result depends on the player's decisions, reading the opponents and risk management. Poker exercises your neurons!

Poker requires mental effort and a huge amount of luck, whereas sport requires physical and mental fitness and a lot of drive. Luck comes a long last if you happen to succeed at sports.

Poker isn’t just a game of chance — luck matters short term, but skill dominates long term.

If it were pure luck, the same players wouldn’t consistently win year after year.
It requires strategy, psychology, discipline, bankroll management, and emotional control.

That said, it’s not a physical sport in the traditional sense.

I’d call it a mind sport — where skill decides the long run, and variance just spices it up.

I would not call it a sport,it is a game of skill with just enough luck to make us think we know what were doing,it kind of makes me feel when I golf, shoot 110 but made 2 great shots on the last hole just to make me think maybe I can play this game:)

Since tournament poker involves competition, it can be considered a sport.

Poker does have an element of short-term luck, but unlike roulette or craps, players have more control over the outcome of any given hand because their actions, to some extent, determine the outcome.Of course poker is a sport.

Poker is not a game of chance; it's a game of strategy, a game that demands study and a lot of dedication, especially if you want to make a living from it.

Neither and both.

Poker is not a sport in the conventional sense, but I believe it is an intellectual sport, like chess.

Poker is a game of chance, but only in the shorter term. That is why there are elite level pros that continually crush; they have a skill edge that in the longer run eclipses short term variance.

Poker is a game of skill because factors such as mathematics, probability, reading opponents, bankroll management, and emotional control make the difference. In that sense, it would be comparable to chess, which is recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee. Poker does have an element of chance (the cards), which is why many institutions do not consider it a traditional sport.

I agree with that. In the short term poker definitely feels like a game of luck, but over the long run skill makes a huge difference. That’s why some players can stay profitable for years while others can’t. Luck affects sessions, but skill shows over time.

Poker is definitely more than just a game of chance — it’s a mind sport. While luck plays a role in the short term, skill, strategy, and decision-making dominate over the long run.

Players who study ranges, probabilities, opponent tendencies, and bankroll management consistently outperform less knowledgeable players. Emotional control and mental discipline also play a huge role, which makes it very different from pure games of chance like lotteries or roulette.

I think calling poker a sport makes sense because it requires training, strategy, and competition, just like chess or other skill-based games. Luck can influence a single hand, but skill determines long-term success.

Many beginners think poker is mostly luck, especially after seeing bad beats or unexpected results. But experienced players often say that skill matters much more in the long run.
What do you think?
Is poker mostly luck, mostly skill, or a mix of both?
And how long do you think it takes for skill to overcome luck in poker?

Poker is a combination of skill and luck. These are two essential components. No matter how experienced a player you are, without luck, you will unfortunately not succeed.

In long term, luck does not exist in poker. If the player is good and adds volume (hundreds of thousands of hands) they will be winning. Considering they won't be playing too many better opponents ;)
Short term, sure, you may be lucky or not.
