Any Advice For Taking Shots?

I normally stick to <=5% of my bankroll and that is fine, but occasionally I will win a freeroll or a satellite and get shots at big Sunday games which is pretty, pretty good.

However, I am finding when I take these shots I play my worst poker. I over-estimate my opponents completely to the point where I end up in needless levelling wars, 4-betting light against player types who aren't the high roller sharks I somehow manically conclude in my mind just because I'm running slightly -EV. :laugh:

So any advice for taking shots? Even if it is just to emotionally detach from the game. I feel like a complete whale, as if I am playing poker for the first time again. Any logic just seeps out of my mind. My auto-pilot, B, C and D game all play better than my taking shots game.

If you win satellite seats then to me it is a freeroll, and it should be easier to play your game and if not experiment to build your game at that level. What I do is I play more aggressive to try to get chips early since a lot of those players will play cautious. As with anything level o competition you will always get those players that call with anything... Just pick your spots and say I am out playing someone this hand.... you have nothing to lolse and everything to gain.

Just keep it solid you don't need get brave with your range to get deep in these.
their will always be spots regardless how high the buy in is, this is important to remember.

Narrow your range and just play TAG you'l do fine as the game goes by you'l start getting a feel for who your up against whos on your left your right etc what their game is this is important to know.


Later on as the levels get deeper They will try to test you if they think your out of your depth or can see your a microstakes reg.

Sometimes I find it's easier to just get it in, later on in a marginal spot worse case scenario If your called and get an important double up
your going to get more respect as a big stack and you'll have more options,


So for me if I'm getting a harder time or the table is quite a tough aggressive table, I'll just get it in good and try gain some control on the table, the games that you can run decent win those crucial flips are the ones where you've got the edge with a nice deep chip index. My advice for taking shots is always have a beer chaser.
