How do the cards run for you? Hot, cold, lukewarm?

Hello people!

As a relative newbie to the world of poker, I wonder how cards play out for people.

I seem to get cold cards more than I would expect. Is that just how this life works? It seems I can sit and fold with total garbage for what seems to be much longer than others do. I'm getting 72o, 93o, 85o, that sort of thing. If I happen to have a broadway card its usually with some random low card. Meanwhile, people at the table are playing with A's, K's, high pairs....

Does that change over time, or am I just exuding bad luck?

I look forward to hearing your experiences.

Good luck out there!
Cheers!

Well, first of all, it's different. Sometimes it doesn’t come at all, sometimes 8 out of 10 hands with aces, I had AA and KK three times in a row, and it also happens that 85o, 43s become quite playable options ...
So do not lose faith in luck and gain experience.

I think you're just exuding pessimism, poker is for the strong.
no matter how much you complain, variance is unforgiving.
the game is difficult and complex, be prepared, because even if you complain if you don't fight to evolve your game, you won't win.

Well it's exactly the same as life: Good days and bad days.
Sometimes I am card dead a whole tournament which means about 2 hours (not more because I don't survive more than that), sometimes luck is on my side and I get a lot of very good hands.
We all have to deal with that. That's poker.
But the more you play the more you learn how to control emotions during those downswings.
Keep faith and good luck at the tables.

Actually I'm starting a conversation and looking for information, not complaining. That said, thank you for your thoughts.

I am learning, I am working on my game, I have patience and I am improving every day.

Usually the good hands are very difficult to get, and it's more probably that you will get a bad hand, but sometimes a bad hand could give surprises at the flop, so you need to manage well your chips to take some risk with "bad hands"

Yes, we all get so many bad hands so you just have to play them sometimes for cheap to enter and win if you constantly discard so it won't work you'll win even less try to play more often

Variance evens out in the long run.

Play more hands.

don't worry about that.
Just learn to play with what you consider to be bad combinations, which will often bring you great joy.
In poker it's not all AA or KK, there's a lot of variance.
Never forget that mathematical probabilities exist, and that it is a game not only of luck, but also of chance and skill.
You have to help luck many times by playing hands that seem disposable

mathematically, like everyone else, garbage cards come to you more, it's natural, don't forget that there is such a thing as a downstreak in poker, one day everything will be the opposite, you will receive more good cards and weak ones to your opponents

If you look at all possible combinations of hands including mixtures of different suits, the number of premium hands including AA, KK, QQ, and AK are much fewer than the number of junk hands that are possible.

This is the reason why you get dealt junk hands way more often than premium hands - it's inherent to the game structure and there is no way around it. If you had a bucket that contained 1000 red beads and 50 black beads, you're always statistically more likely to draw a red bead from the bucket than a black bead.

There are some good days and there are some bad days. Then there are days like today that just make you want to barf on the table.

Hi UnderDawg

Cold for me. Always cold. And when I do hit decent hands, they run into better hands. It's frustrating but it's poker. I would have won with the mucked hands but I can't justify playing 84o or J5o. They go on the make two pairs, trips, or full houses but if I started playing those hands I'd be down to 0BB in no time. I just end up playing the hands accordingly and hope this is the day I get lucky.

It's been one of those bad days today. JJ runs into KK, AK runs into AT, and T hits. KQs runs into A6 and they hit their A. TT runs into 4 diamond board and someone had the Ad, but they still lose because 44 hit their 4 and the only non-diamond had paired the board so hit their full house. It's a crazy game when everyone else has good luck.

I feel I'm a pretty unlucky player, but I can still somehow min-cash in a few MTT and I can usually increase my bankroll in cash games, but it's a slog and seeing other players hitting the flop consistently, especially when they're betting like a maniac, makes it seem like I'll never be that lucky. But that one hand in 1000, something goes right and I'm golden. Patience helps a lot but sometimes the ante and blinds win.

Thank you for the feedback.. Good to know it's not just my luck.

That said, there is truth in being patient. I do find that in many cases, waiting for the right hands to come along can pay off, notably when others decide to call my raises. Steal the blinds from time to time, have to watch who's after me however. I have done well in play money tournaments while only playing a handful of hands. The end game gets a little tricky, but that's life.

I'm getting cold cards too and this happen to every poker player. Poker is not as easy as it looks and most of the time you will be getting bad cards.

Note to self, stop inviting Luvpoker to home games. :)

Propane Goat hit it on the head & remember poker is a game of incomplete information, just because a player or 3 at your table are playing a lot of hands does not mean they are getting better starting hands than you are.

I think your mind is sabotaging you. This is normal to happen, however, you have to know what the open raise, open call and open fold ranges are. Overall, the more experience you gain the more it becomes irrelevant, like bad luck.

It's a roller coaster. There are days when the good cards are pouring in, other days nothing.
You can't win all the time, but it's also extremely bad when you're in a bad streak for days.
You have to go on and never give up.
