How to prevent people from calling straight and flush draws

Hello everyone,

I'm in tournaments daily and I find that it is very hard to get players to fold draws.

For instance I hit a pair along with two same rank cards however there are flush and straight draws, I go all-in thinking if you want to see a draw you are going to have pay a hefty bet to see the turn and river.

Lone and behold the player calls my all-in and the worst part is the turn completed a straight.

Any strategies to combat situations like that?

I mean playing higher stakes may be the only way to bust the draw, most people would suggest betting more, but you are shoving so there is no way to increase that bet size. Maybe play it slower and when they hit and become the aggressor be able to fold your set or two pair.

So you got someone to call your shove, with a worse hand than yours - that's something you should be happy about. Sure you didn't win this time, but you were in a +EV situation and over time you'll come out ahead if you can keep getting your money in like that.

Of course, that's not to say it was the best way to play the hand - we'd need a lot more information to work that out.

But generally speaking you don't want to stop people calling you with straight and flush draws - what you want to do is give them a bad price to call you with a straight or flush draw. Lay them the wrong pot odds to call you and again, you'll come out ahead in the long run - even if they do catch their draws and beat you sometimes.

Dont be panic. Pushing all in instead of standard raise would just make your hands look like a bluff so people tend to call more.

On the other hand, just make standard raise. You can bet bigger on the turn to push them in a harder situation. And dont feel bad if you lose that hand, move on.

In the long run you are going to win 75% of those hands. Let them call. It sucks when they hit, but when they don't, you should be positioned to run deep.

There are a lot of players in small entry S&G and tourneys that will call on a flush or open ended straight draw. Most are aggressive in nature and you can't stop that. You just have to decide if you have the best hand going in and play the odds. Win some, lose some. I personally play to win, so i accept bad beats as they come.

Essentially, what you are saying is "I don't want anymore of your money. Please fold. I'm happy not getting max value for my hand."

Getting it in against a draw with a made hand is EV+, so theoretically you shouldn't change anything about that approach. Tournament strategy might lead you to play the hand differently than what's theoretically best, though.

The thing to be wary of is when people have you covered, because it's hard to generate any fold equity with pot odds. Like if I'm sitting here with a nut flush draw, and some shortstack gets it in when the pot is already as big as he's betting, no chance I'm just throwing my hand away. Even if I know he flopped the best hand.

The one thing you need to realize Is this.

You can't control what players do. This doesn't mean you can't "manipulate" players, just means you can't "Fully control their actions", You can "Bet on flop" to "give Incorrect odds to call", but this doesn't "guarantee that the said player folds the draw", and once the "draw gets their you can slow down", and thus "lose the min". Again all of this depends on the villain you're up against, and what your reads are.

So you first need to understand the player to know what the correct avenue to take vs the said player Is, as some players only call with combo, and other are willing to shove A.I on you with the "Said draw", and others aren't willing to call with the draw. You also need to consider other factors such as, the stage of the game you're In, and the amount of BBs the said player has, the price of the game, the type of game (Is It a hyper/turbo/slow/deep stacked). Many different factors to consider, your hand, your stack vs their stack.
