Most people play high cards and aim for a risk free strategy, only problem is the high cards don't always win. So the risk is still there, if you play 50/100 hands you missed half of the potentials to win. Remember that...

50 VPIP is actually a little bit too high in my opinion. How many hands do you want to play? 80/100? Of course, if the people at your table let you, I would do it everytime, too, but they won't. If the see you calling too much, they'll just start re-raising you at some point.
You don't need to play only hight cards, if you have connected mid-cards, you can play them sometimes. You can also play low suited connectors sometimes. But if your VPIP value is too high, and the others can see your value across tables, you won't be able to be successful in the long run. It's not even possible to get to a final table with such a paly style. That's actually a big part of the game itsself. Start calling eight out of 10 hands and after 30 minutes you will be either out, or left with 5 BB or in the top 10, but then if you continue that palystyle, you'll lose everything again. Hand by hand. Talking from my own experince here. I have tried that out myself. It's a phase of my game I'm not fully done with yet and trying to get it into control.

I think a lot depends on the position at the table!! Accordingly, I open more hands depending on the position

If the potential to win is there I would play 100/100 hands... Which it is. That is dependent on the players potential to win the hand. There is a risk to playing more hands: you could lose a large part to all of your stack on any of those hands. A small risk such as a big blind in the earlier stages of a tournament or the set amount in cash games; really shouldn't be an issue for a player looking to get in to big money pot situations. If they see you calling and "re-raise"; as long as the raise is within your risk range it is worth an opportunity to win. Being very careful can get you in to the final stages of the tournament but if you are unwilling to take risks; you are unlikely to walk away the victor. Most know on the final table 5BB can be anyone even the eventual winner of the tournament.

I get what you’re saying, but I think there’s an important distinction here.
Playing strong starting hands isn’t about being risk-free, it’s about managing risk and playing higher EV spots.
You’re right that high cards don’t always win, but they tend to perform better over time and are easier to play postflop, especially for most players.

It’s not about playing more to avoid missing opportunities. It’s about playing the right opportunities better.
