I play both in the same way, opening raise
I don't think poker player can have special cards.

I prefer they come suited ! More possibilites to flush

I'd be very happy to get dealt both of those hands, but I always feel a bit awkward playing those medium pairs postflop when overcards hit. But that's just something I need to work on.

I am not sure that one hand has preference over the other. Pocket 8's to jacks all play very similar, and are hard to play when the over cards flop. But AK is always tricky, and I know many players who just jam them hoping to get lucky with 5 community cards. Tough to play big pots post flop if nothing hits on the flop when you hold AK.

not a lot of information here is this ring or mtt? i prefer the nines in mtt i probably prefer ak in ring. just my two cents. I would raise more with nines in mtt or the same but would more likely raise the nines then ak in either situation.

Also history is that day ak hitting etc.. all that matters but ya id try to sneak into a hand with ak if was ring.

If mtt do i have a table that respects me? Than everytime im raising both and again probably like the ak a little better. If a tight table easy steal. If good table couple raises in front I would try to outdraw with the ak and might fold the nines situations vary

I would want the AK. Because there has been many times my pockets were beaten by someone who bet all the way and hit their A or K.

I do like when you hit your 9 and then have trips and you get the person who hits their A or K. But I never hit that.

99 is definitely better considering you don't have to fill it. Depending on the point in the tourney, people could be shoving K8 or anything like that which you have dominated.

What type of game is it?

What are stacks at the table?

What are blinds?

What is the action before you?

Will there be post-flop action?

If this were an MTT and a HU situation, I'd want AK because there are a lot of flops you can cbet that 99 will have a hard time playing against. You also have a lot more equity to hit on the turn of the flop is so low card more than 99 does if the flop is high cards.

If it's multi way, then 99 is the better option. Easier have to get paid off on if you hit a set vs multiple opponents. And easier hand to let go if you miss.

I am guessing preflop 99 is strong. If there is a re-raise or more than two players fighting for pot, it can be disastrous. Anyone holding two cards with 10 kicker has 6 outs. Therefore viable. Chances are someone on the board may have folded 9x ( unless a9, k9, 10,9) after raise.

Both are good hands and I will be playing them. Will most likely bet the AK higher, but the odds are in favor of the 9s.

AK, suited or not, is a DRAWING hand. It is not now, nor has is ever been, a pair.

If there is possible post flop action (not an all-in situation), then you have to consider which hand has more equity on most flops.

If the flop is 7 5 Q rainbow, would you rather have 22 or AK? It's a lot easier to play AK, either as aggressor or not than it is 22.

So, while on paper, pairs are a slight favorite vs non-paired over cards, it's a lot different in game.

If all-in the 99, if there is a post flop play AK. 99 is easely dominated + yyou will fold them to often or to rarely, while if you have AK folding/calling is easier.

Any pocket pair has a better chance of winning than AK.

Are you talking about all-in preflop only?

Or with post flop action included?

And what will be your position after the flop, in or out?

Taken just as a pure hand strength, both are playable from MP. Against random hands, 99 is about 55% to win against the 45% of the AK.

So the answer really depends upon (like with almost every NLHE question) what you are asking exactly. That's what makes it such a great game--so many things to consider when playing a hand.

99 is not better
regardless shortstack or middle stack

AK is much better than 99
for it hits...get value from weak A, like AQ
if get 3bet, not that behind even against JJ< QQ

99 unless hit set, mostly in tough situation, middle pair , made hands...mostly on the way ahead , way behind situation.

besides, AK have two blocker, block AA, and KK, means you hold AK , outside at most 3 AA or 3KK
you hold 99 out side have 6AA, or 6KK, which one is better?

If everyone folds before u in middle position then id rather 99 because its a made hand and a slight favourite over AK but with 99 u only have 2 outs in order to make a monster where as AK has more outs also if they are suited theres alot more outs to make a fush u got 11 for a fush and 3A and 3K

It all depends on what you're playing, the freeroll for everything, and so depending on the bet and oponents.:jd4:

99 mathematically is better because already has a hand made. Anyway, one against one is almost a coin flip.
