I found an older video from an online reg PLO player/ streamer who had decent results playing medium stakes nl/ PLO according to 2p2 posts and google playing against the great Tony G. It's a decent watch if you don't mind kiwi cussing a lot.
The most important thing I think anyone can take from it though is the metagaming and leveling. Not only is Tony a Coinpoker founder according to this article (meaning the enormous rake generated was completely asymmetrical in terms of cost) but the stakes are MUCH higher than what Kaki was used to playing. Tony G has a reputation for blasting and Kaki was excited to play heads up against him. Clearly Kaki thought he had a significant edge otherwise there isn't much to gain.
Well, it doesn't take long into the video until you can see Kaki squirming due to the stakes and risk (fwiw I would probably have a heart attack in that spot, not that I have the risk tolerance or capacity for that) of playing for so much against someone who has little to lose. If Tony G has a special talent- it's metagaming. Baiting someone into your home turf at your preferred stakes is such a great move to whittle away at someones confidence and create a psychological edge.
Aside from increasing rake (which Tony likely benefits from) there was no reason why Tony couldn't just play the same stakes as the table that was originally referenced at the start of the video... unless there was one party that felt more comfortable at those stakes. A heads up 200PLO table will test your skill just as much as a 40,000PLO table if the opponent is the same, adding zeros doesn't change the game but it does change the risk. The biggest thing that it changes is the emotional and mental toll, and in that case Kaki has a massive negative freeroll.
This was Kakis second last video. I do wonder if this session was a contributor to stopping (his twitch is also gone).
What do you think? Would you ever move up dramatically in stakes to take on someone you thought you were better than?
