what is a 3 bet?

is the first bet called a bet or a raise?
can you raise the BB or do we consider it betting
instead of raising

If I’m in EP and I don’t want to limp after the BB then I can raise. If I then get raised, it’s called a 3 bet. If someone else raises it’s a 4 bet.

The blinds don´t count like a bet, they are amount of chips automatic paid. (SB: 1/2 blind and BB: 1 blind)
The first raise is the Open Raise (OR), its the first bet after the blinds. If we pay the same amount of BB then we are limping.
3bet is the second bet (or raise) to the OR, 4bet is the raise to the 3bet... If we pay the same amount than the 3bet, then we are doing coldcall.
"Raise" or "bet" are words that mean the same, we use to said "raise" when we open raise (OR: the first raise), and "bet" is more used for the bets made after the first raise.

Let's say you make a bet and player A raises you. If a player B raises again, then we say he re-raised, but if a player C raises again, then we would have to say that he re-re-raised, let alone if another player (D) raised, do we have to say re-re-re-raised ?

So to make things easier, or simpler :

* You bet.
* A raises.
* B 3-bets.
* C 4-bets.
* D 5-bets.

And so on ...

PS : Yes the BB is a bet. It's called a Blind Bet.

Sorry gardin555, but the blinds are bets. Also called Blind Bets.

Dont be sorry, we are just exchanging opinions and learning. :unsure::)
BB means Big Blind not Blinds Bet... ;) , the blinds are automatic bets of course, but this is not take in account like voluntary bet of the players, but obligatory. Thats because the first bet is called Open Raise, because is the firts bet ( open or begin the bet) and this is not the BB, its a bet after the blinds. :)

I think all options are wrong actually.

The first RFI = Raise first in is the first regular raise (in case it's not a limp).

And the next re-raise is then called the 3-bet.

Edit: Sorry, oversaw the third poll option. 😂

As far as I understand it. The first chips put into a pot in each round of betting is called a bet. Therefore pre flop this is the BB. Post flop the first money put in is called a bet. Therefore the 2nd amount put in is a raise, so either an open raise preflop or the 2nd bet after the flop.

So therefore a 3 bet is either the 2nd raise pre, or 3rd bet post. This makes sense, if you just count the number of bets/rasies. A 3 bet should always theoretically be the 3rd bet/raise.

I had to google this, as I'd fallen foul of not saying raise in certain situations, and I hadn't quite worked out why, so I just started saying raise in all situations. One total knob decided to pull me up on it, without actually taking the care to explain why. You get these arrogant posturing idiots live. Anyway, later I should have doubled up through him, as I again said raise at him with AQo I think, he called with AJo, Unfortunately he spiked his J, so I couldn't get my revenge.

Thank you so much gardin. That's the attitude we should all embrace.
As to our topic. You are saying it yourself. You are calling the 1st bet (rightly) an open-raise. It couldn't have been called a raise if there were no bet before it, right ? And the "bet" before it is the BB.
When you are UTG, your only actions are fold, call or raise (Not bet), if you call, you call the bet made before you, and if you raise, you raise the bet made before you. In both cases, it's the BB.

My understanding of this is that it refers to preflop action and the 3-better is the first person to reraise.
Bet 1=the big blind forced bet
Bet 2=the first raise
Bet 3=the first reraise

Simplest way: A 3-bet is the first Re-Raise pre flop.
