Had a friend down from CO this week and we played in the weekly NLHE neighborhood tournament, which is basically an 8-handed SNG $60 + $10 for high hand, with $20 adding if you get under 6000, $20 add on at break, with top 2 paid.

I made it down to 3 and the other short stack offered to chop 2nd place money. I declined, and in the very next hand decided that K4o was good enough to shove 5BBs into the chipleader, when I could have folded and let the other shorty duke it out in the next hand. Oops, stupid-tax paid. 🤦‍♂️

My friend and I ended up heads-up in a 5-handed $20 turbo after the main game. I shoved 67o and he called with K7o and won $100, winner take all.

On Friday we drove two hours to Horseshoe Bossier City for a 1/3 cash game where the buyin is capped at the largest stack, which I think was around $600. I sat with $440 and had the choice of sitting in seat 7 left of my friend or in seat 3, so I chose 3.

I had the fun end of the table and had an experienced player on my right. There was a table boss at the opposite end who chipped up quickly from $300 to $1300 so I spent a few hours watching what kind of hands he was 3-betting and showing down.

I eventually picked up KK and got into a big hand with him. Hit KKK55 on the river and got my last $150 in and he folded on a missed flush draw and left the table. I was sad to see him leave, although people were bitching about him raising and winning most of his hands.

I think I had a little over $700 after that hand, then won a couple of high hand bonus wheel spins for $150 total, won some other pots and got to around $1100.

Decided to play some Kd2d trash and got into a hand with a Vietnam vet on my left, great guy. Called some reasonable bets then lead out for $50 on the river after hitting a king high flush and he looked at my stack and raised to $250. I thought I was probably beat, but had seen him bluff a few times so I called and he took it down with AdJd for the nut flush. Ouch.

Ultimately left with $700 so not terrible. Overall had a great time for the first outing there and will be back. I’m not a great cash game player but am willing to learn from my mistakes there.

One thing I noticed about the dealers. There was one who knew one of the players in seat 1 on the fun end. Dealer had us laughing our asses off, even knocked his friend’s chipstack over, and the vibe made a big difference in his tip rate as you might imagine, as some of us were there to have fun.

Many of the other dealers were quiet and all business, and people were less willing to tip as much. Something to be aware of if you deal cards for money.

Thanks! Super fun trip. I forgot to mention bomb pots. I’ve seen them in YouTube videos but they are new to me and it took a while to get the hang of it. Not convinced they are worth the $5, but it spiced up the game a bit at each dealer change.

There was also a splash pot where the floor put $100 chip in play. I had a piece of the flop, but it was a wet board, so when the guy on my left bet just $20 on the river and got one caller, I was convinced I was beat despite being incredibly priced in to make the call. And that’s how you miss out on a roughly $150 pot. I would have won the hand. 🤦‍♂️
