When I started playing poker in 2012, I began with PokerStars. I remember the first time I played, I had 2, 3, 5 hours on the flop and I had King of the Kings, 4 Diamonds. I thought I had a flush and a straight, so I folded all my chips! And I lost!

Then, a year later, we set up a table with friends at my house. We started by buying in with $1. There were nine of us, and the pot easily reached $50 or $80 in a single night. We set a cut-off time, and whoever was still playing would leave with whatever chips they had. That was every day until we raised the stakes at the end of the night, and then two or three players would leave with a winning chip! Later, we raised the buy-in to $2 to start, and eventually, you could buy in with $4 or the equivalent of whatever you were losing! The pots reached $200 every night with nine people. This lasted for about three years; I lived off table poker! It was a great time because it was from 10 pm until 5 or 6 am. I learned a lot about live poker, even though I've only been to a casino once in all these years!

When playing live, it's a completely different style of play! I really like that too!

I live in an area that is mostly small towns, 1,500 to 7,500 people. 15years ago there were poker games all over the place & weekend tournaments held in rented halls, & at the Legion sometimes with close to 200 entrants! (I never won a single thing in those tournaments, and at the first few I was soooo nervous!). It was also easy to find weekend SnG tourneys, some houses had a cutoff of 18 players, others with just 9. And for others there were some underground cash games being run - - one table running in an apt. rented specifically for the poker game ($1/$2 but sometimes $2/5). I mostly played the cash game but was tight on funds and usually had a backer.
Today. I know of zero games in our area :( Until just a couple weeks ago when I spotted a poster on the Bulletin board at the local grocery store advertising a 'Poker Tournament'! Super excited but then realized I wasn't going to be able to make it as I was scheduled for surgery the day before. I called them up anyways (the poster said you needed to call in advance to book your spot as spots were limited), to find out how often it would be running. They informed me that it is planned to happen every two months. Maybe it will build up to something more often or perhaps I'll learn of some other games while there. (it's about 60km from my home).

That sounds fun! I've never got together a group like this, but it would be cool to try and win a little money at even if it means risking losing some.
