Human concentration is quite limited, especially when playing online. Sitting on a chair for four hours straight in a tournament is mentally exhausting.
How many times per week can you realistically allow yourself to play this kind of long tournament? And if you do it often, don’t you feel it negatively impacts your decision-making and overall performance?
I’m curious to hear how you manage your mental energy and focus over the long run.

During a gaming session, it is enough to change your body position and stretch a little to give your cells the necessary energy boost.A poker chair should be as comfortable as possible. It's important that every part of your body is relaxed.Remember this simple rule: the better your condition, the higher your concentration will be.It lasts me 4-5 hours.

After 5 hours it's gone. Concentration. And I'm looking to end my games, tourneys and sit&gos.

I get so wrapped up in the game when I am playing time does not effect me,played lots of tournaments that have lasted 8 or more hours never seemed to bother me,never understood that when people say I lose concentration after a few hours ,you cant sit down and play a trny with a 100 players and not think your still going to be playing 4 plus hours later if you want a chance to win, patience is the key so sit back relax and take it all in before you go all-in:)

Personally, ever since I play poker relatively well, fatigue hasn't been a problem. Obviously, I'm referring to when you're 100% at the start of a tournament, without alcohol or anything like that could affect your game.

But for those who don't know how to stay focused for long periods, I recommend trying to play more qualifiers. I believe that making consistent profits by eliminating other players stimulates the brain in a positive way and keeps it interested in continuing with that positive feeling of victory. This helps them maintain a good game (don't be blinded by the qualifiers; after all, it's still a long tournament and the big prizes are always close to the end).

For me, high-level concentration lasts about 2–3 hours before I start noticing a drop in decision quality. After that, performance depends a lot on breaks, nutrition, and sleep.

I don’t think the issue is playing long tournaments occasionally — it’s doing it too often without recovery. If I grind several long sessions in a row, I definitely feel the impact on focus and patience.

What helps me:

  • Scheduling at least 1–2 full days off per week
  • Short walks or stretching during breaks
  • Reducing table count late in sessions
  • Prioritizing sleep over extra volume
Mental energy is like a muscle — you can train it, but it still needs recovery. Long-term performance comes more from consistency than from pushing maximum volume every day.

Being able to play longer sessions and/or more tables at the same time, while maintaining close to your A game it's not easy and you need lots of practice and to study a lot as you need to have confidence in you making the correct play in different spots despite having little time to act ... You also need a good schedule on and off the poker tables, it helps if you are active physically- like for example playing a sport, running etc... also, IMO you have to have free days every week(I think it depends on each individual, but something along 3-4 days of play/week) and take (short) breaks often to recharge and also to have longer time to study to improve your game...

Playing online I can manage pretty well to maintain focus for several hours, with some aid: coffee, water, music and my desktop setup allows me to change from being sitting to being standing up.

My playing sessions are fixed on specific hours of the day and setting apart that time is helpful to avoid distractions and being focus (just like being focus at your gym/trainning sessions and such).

For sit&go I ussually play 3 hours per session and for tournaments I can play up to 5-6 hours before I get uncomfortable

Since I don’t usually play many tables at the same time, it’s relatively easy for me to stay focused because there isn’t constant action. But if you’re playing a lot of tables, it can definitely become mentally exhausting.
The only advice I can give is to take care of your overall health so your mind stays sharp. Things like exercising, eating well, and taking breaks when you feel they’re necessary make a big difference in maintaining concentration over long sessions.

I can string out like 15 hours live and 4 day max tournaments.

I could probably go a couple days without sleeping online haha way to much time if only playing one table in the comfort of my house

I spend a good part of the day playing games, so to maintain concentration I try to take breaks to relax and go for a walk.

For me as an average person it can vary depending on my daily state, sometimes only 20 minutes somtimes 30 or 40 minutes.
The time span decreases when getting older.

But most average poker players can stay fully focused for about 45 to 75 minutes before their attention naturally starts to fade.
Cognitive research shows that the brain’s ability to filter information and make precise decisions drops as mental fatigue builds,
especially during tasks that require constant evaluation like poker.
Many players notice that after an hour, they become more emotional, less patient, or more prone to calling without thinking—classic signs of reduced executive function.
Short breaks help restore concentration because they give the prefrontal cortex time to recover and process accumulated stress.

People that maintain to have 2 or more hours of full focus are "Monsters" :ROFLMAO:

I can maintain my concentration for about 5 hours. Then I start to lose concentration. So I stop for a few minutes to stretch my legs and have a drink.

For me, about 60–90 minutes of strong concentration is realistic.

After that, focus usually starts to drop and mistakes can creep in.
Taking short breaks helps reset the mind and maintain decision quality.

In long sessions, I try to play in focused blocks rather than nonstop grinding.
Good concentration management is just as important as strategy in poker.

Usually I can stay fully focused for about 4 to 5 hours straight. After that, it’s mostly downhill.
But on some days, when I’m really well rested, I get into a flow state and can play 7 to 9 hours with full attention.
Those days are rare, though.

I usually try to limit long sessions to 3–4 hours, because after that my focus drops and I start making worse decisions. Taking short breaks, stretching, and staying hydrated really helps me maintain concentration. For me, playing 2–3 long tournaments per week is a good balance between performance and avoiding mental burnout.
