Good point, I rarely play outside my station either online or live. I wouldn't feel comfortable playing for more than I can afford to lose.

It is recommended 100 bankroll buy-ins for each tournament and no more than 5% of your bankroll in a single session, because of the variance.

I agree with you, but I have two reservations:

- Playing with very low buy-ins also has the negative effect of making you lower your guard and play excessively loose, which can also compromise your game.

- In fact, letting the buy-in size influence your game is also a flaw that needs to be worked on. Discipline in poker must be strong enough to prevent you from being influenced by it.

I break down buy-ins (BI) for MTT as follows:
1. 10+ minutes blind levels --Bankroll is 100x BI\ Reenty MTT is 150x BI \ Rebuy/Addon is 200x BIs

2. 6 to 8 minutes blind level (Turbo MTT) is 150x BI \ Reentry MTT is 175x BI \ Rebuy/Addon is 225x BIs

3. 5 or less minutes (Hyper MTT) is 200x BI \ Reentry MTT is 225x BI \ Rebuy/Addon is 250x BIs

One other item is allow play slight large BI MTT is the following
a. Your average MTT BI is $6.6. The sum of five MTT would be $33. You can play the following MTT BI:

$11 BI MTT, $6.6 BI MTT, Two $5.5 MTT ($11 combine) and $4.4 BI MTT

Based on this example, allow you to register higher BI based on average for five MTT in this group.

gambling with money you cannot afford to lose is deliberately putting yourself at a disadvantage. Players who engage in such behavior either do not understand what they are doing, or perhaps they simply lack excitement.

I like to play lower entry fee tournaments. With live tournaments today that means for me up to around $160 and maybe sometimes $200. There are enough of those here in New England, but I love my annual trips to Vegas. There I find numerous ones to pick from every day of the week.

This is a good way of looking at things. I notices when I was playing higher buy ins, that I would bluff more, teying to get people to fold, which lefr bad results for me because the people that stayes in the hand had the better cards.

Playing with a comfortable buy-in really helps with decision making. When there’s no financial pressure, it’s much easier to focus on the game and make the correct plays. MTTs already have high variance, so proper bankroll management and choosing the right buy-ins are very important for long-term success.
