Lately I feel that online poker has become much tougher than before, even at lower stakes. Players seem more disciplined, more patient, and less likely to make obvious mistakes. It feels like you really have to stay focused every single session, otherwise you get punished quickly.

At the same time, I still think there are good opportunities if you adapt, choose tables well, and manage your bankroll properly. Autopilot poker just doesn’t work anymore for me.

What’s your experience?

Every year, there are more and more players: regular participants, students and members of foundations. Of course, it's getting harder. Microliths are more complicated because of the huge kilopoles, in my opinion. Tournaments have an unlimited number of re-entries. The higher the level, the fewer participants, but the level of players is also much higher.

I think online poker has definitely gotten harder over time because of the rise of GTO and the huge amount of study material available. Many players now understand the game much better and try to play more optimally, especially at mid and higher stakes.

That said, at lower stakes most players still don’t have strong fundamentals. Even if they don’t play optimally, they can still win in the short term, sometimes through mistakes or pure variance. But in the long run, those players are much easier to beat if you have solid fundamentals and discipline. So yes, the overall level has increased, but there are still plenty of good opportunities, especially at lower limits.

TThere has been tremendous growth in online poker, where naturally the tendency is for it to become more difficult, as people tend to improve.

Poker is not getting harder, it's the opponents getting better, so to make a profit you have to get better, that's why you have to analyze your game and learn.

I don't play a lot of online poker, just recreational low cash games sessions. I don't even beat the lowest stakes. Either the players have gotten better or the equities run very close and other players gamble pays off. I would suggest to use online poker to improve your skills and then try live poker. The biggest tournaments are in live poker.

I meet quite a few maniac players these days, maybe not all poker sites are the same.

I think it has gotten tougher overall, especially compared to a few years ago. Even at lower stakes, players have access to training sites, solvers, and content, so the average level is higher. The obvious mistakes are less common.

That said, I don’t think the games are unbeatable — they just punish autopilot more. Table selection, adjusting to population tendencies, and staying mentally sharp matter a lot more now.

The edge is thinner, but it’s still there for players who study and adapt.

I completely agree with your observation. The landscape of online poker has definitely shifted over the past few years. With the widespread availability of solvers, advanced training content, and preflop charts, the average baseline skill level of the player pool has increased significantly. Players at lower stakes are indeed making fewer glaring fundamental errors.

However, as you rightly pointed out, poker is a game of continuous adaptation. While the days of blindly printing money with a basic ABC strategy might be over, the edge now lies in exploiting specific opponent tendencies, rigorous table selection, and maintaining a rock-solid mental game. Autopilot is definitely a recipe for disaster in today's games. Keep adapting, studying, and the win rate will follow

Of course, poker, both live and online, gets more difficult every year. I say this because of the various software programs available to improve your game and the need for each player to keep improving

but not in the way most people think.

Online poker isn’t necessarily “impossible” now, but the baseline competence level has definitely increased. Even at low stakes, players today:

  • Understand basic preflop ranges
  • Use HUD stats or tracking software
  • Know standard c-bet frequencies
  • Study from YouTube / training sites
  • Have at least some awareness of GTO concepts
Ten years ago, you could print money just value-betting top pair. Now, even micro-stakes players defend wider, 3-bet more aggressively, and don’t stack off as lightly.

That said, what’s really changed is this:

The edge is smaller — but still there.

The biggest difference I see is that autopilot doesn’t work anymore. If you’re:

  • Not table selecting
  • Not adjusting to population tendencies
  • Not reviewing hands
  • Not managing tilt
You’ll feel like the games are unbeatable.

But here’s the important part — while regs have improved, recreational mistakes haven’t disappeared. They’ve just become more subtle. Instead of open-limping every hand, they:

  • Overfold to aggression
  • Under-bluff rivers
  • Mismanage short stacks
  • Play fit-or-fold postflop
The money is still there — it just requires more awareness and discipline.

In my opinion, online poker hasn’t gotten “harder,” it’s gotten more honest. You can’t rely on obvious mistakes anymore — you have to create edges intentionally.

It's true that online poker is becoming very complicated; bot farms have even appeared on poker sites. This further complicates the online poker world. It's no secret that reaching the final months is becoming increasingly difficult, and you see unbelievable poker hands.

Depends what you mean by "lately". Of course online poker has gradually evolved over the years, and games are not as soft, as they were during the early boom years before 2011. But its not like, there has been some kind of revolution over say the last 3-4 years. Its also incorrect to talk about "players", as if everyone were the same. There have always been a mix of serious regulars and fish, who dont study much theory at all and make big fundamental mistakes. If you dont find fish in a particular game, then you should change your game selection.

Online poker has always been a game of strategy, but today many players study extensively before playing, using tools, videos, courses, and analysis software. This increases the overall level of the tables.
