It has taken a little while, a big dream and a lot of patience for American Jonathan Tamayo to win the 2024 world series of poker Main Event! Jonathan is a 4-time wsop Circuit ring winner so he is no stranger to winning. However, this will likely be his most memorable finish ever as he outlasted over 10,000 players and took home the biggest trophy and $10 Million!

This is not Jonathan's first run at the Main Event or his first Main Event cash. Fifteen years ago, Tamayo finished the Main Event in 21st, good for $352,832 and made a deep run in 2015 when he finished 78th. He is a 4-time WSOP Circuit ring winner, so he is no stranger to winning. His friend and roommate, the 2015 Main Event winner, was on the rail, too.

“Not real life. My roommate’s picture is right there from 2015. We both have banners now. What in the world just happened,” Tamayo said afterwards. “Leading up to it, Joe was just like, play your game. I realized you’re never going to play perfect poker, and weird things happen, and it’s just unreal.”

Jordan Griff, of the USA, wins $6 million for his deep run, while Niklas Astedt takes $4 million home to Sweden.

The final table finished as listed below:

PlacePlayerCountryPayout (USD)
1Jonathan TamayoUnited States$10,000,000
2Jordan GriffUnited States$6,000,000
3Niklas AstedtSweden$4,000,000
4Jason SagleCanada$3,000,000
5Boris AngelovBulgaria$2,500,000
6Andres GonzalezSpain$2,000,000
7Brian KimUnited States$1,500,000
8Joe SerockUnited States$1,250,000
9Malo LatinoisFrance$1,000,000

I intended to participate in this event, but my beautiful, dear and wonderful wife didn't let me, she told me to stay at home cleaning and take care of the children, this woman is incredible.🥰😁🤣

That stack is always amazing to look at during heads up.

Great few days and caught a lot of it on PokerGo.

Dream to play it some day

You might not have folded headsup, but again, maybe you would have?!

This is how the hand went down time stamped 52:59

What a nice guy. In fact, I thought all the final 3 were good guys. I'd have been happy seeing either of them win.

Genuinely thought Griff was going to do it though but not to be. Still he can buy a lot of nappies with 6 mil. Or diapers, even.

I too enjoyed this ^

But unfortunately part of his victory speech turned that around. He thanked his rail for providing him with the help and without it he doesn't think he would've won.... maybe 7th or 8th (his words). And during the stream it shows him running over to Joe & Dom and going over the hands on the solver on Dom's laptop.
Something needs to be done about this going forward imo... there's no way this can be good for the game. I personally would not even want to enter now :(

He probably said this to promote whatever poker product they are selling.

I agree, this is wrong and shouldn't be allowed.

It was a great heads-up match and Jonathan Tamayo will be a really great champion. Sadly, I really was rooting on Jordan Griff to win. He is a true amateur and it would have been great for the game had he won.

Yeah this bothered me as well and I think this should be stopped as well. Considering just before my event this year it was made clear using a solver was not really allowed why would this be OK.

Because I am not a live poker player (and can't even really call myself a casual poker player these days) I don't know why this wouldn't be a rule already but wouldn't there be some kind of complaint BEFORE he won the game at the very least? not to mention a grievance?

There may of been a complaint we don't know about. In recent years there have been players getting advice and info from the stream from there rail. The using the solver is the thing I think is the issue, My best guess is next year it wont be allowed that way.

There's currently a big kerfuffle/discussion going on over it... many thinking it was okay to use it but many more thinking otherwise (one of his 'coaches' was Dominik Nitsche, the guy who created DTO Trainer, the guy who won 'The Venom' on ACR earlier this year... along with many prior poker achievments)

I definitely think, any kind of coaching or use of software / charts should be limited to breaks, where players are not at the table. This is not, what the rail is there for, and its hugely unfair to people, who dont bring their coach to the game.

Yah I think it's absolutely ridiculous! Even today while reading through many 'pros' responses, it seems many were in favor of people coaching from the rail & using laptops to review hands while doing so was fine as far as they were concerned. I think it's terrible for promoting the game to new players & recreational players and personally, 'if' I were a pro I'm pretty sure I'd be feeling the same as I do now. (that sh1t is RIDICULOUS!)

They are basically looking for any kind of edge, they can find of the recreational players, and its up to the tournament organizers to draw a line. Hopefully some changes will be made next years, so we dont see this rail coaching happen again. Its seems pretty easy to me to just implement a rule, that players are not allowed to receive any kind of external help, while they are at the table, which should of course include the rail. I mean... would they also allow someone to call his coach on the phone in between hands? And if not then what is the difference? Poker is not supposed to be like "who wants to become a millionaire", where people can use a lifeline and call a friend ;)

It was a great game! It’s a pity that Nicholas is only 3rd, I was rooting for him, after all, he’s a player of such a level, he plays so much online, well, he still got a good result!

Well, my eyes have been opened. I still find it hard to understand why there haven't been rules in place to avoid 'help from the rail during a tournament'. But, I guess if it is allowed who are we to discredit the win? Just as fundiver mentioned, 'They are basically looking for any kind of edge, they can find of the recreational players, and its up to the tournament organizers to draw a line.' Tournament organizers should be looking to change the rules to reflect at minimum, fairness to all whether amateur or pro.
