Ontario Canada players are once again able to join the International player pool!

But what at one time seemed like a terrible thing for poker players from Ontario actually turned out to be a great thing for the 'regs', many of who were able to move up in buyin level and win much more than they had been previously.

I'm not sure if they are giving Ontario residents the option to play in both the fenced pool (just Ontario) 'and' the Int'l pool or one or the other, or just the Int'l pool.
It'd be interesting to hear from some CC members who are living in Ontario to hear what's going on there today. @MTCashman might have an idea.

I'm not in Ontario, I live in Quebec. I know the 888 poker application was different for Ontario players. Initially I had difficulty understanding why my account wasn't working ( I had taken a break of a few years from 888). It was because I had downloaded the Ontario App which was not working for Quebec. Anyway, I'm glad they can join the international pool of players. I guess they couldn't because of legislation.

Will be interesting to see what 888 does with account balances on the Ontario site. I have some money on there for when I am physically in Ontario.

It probably does not make financial sense for operators to maintain special Ontario sites, unless its a government requirement. So my guess is, these will now close down, and Ontario based players will be referred back to the global sites like PokerStars.com.

As someone living in Ontario, this is NOT a thing yet. All of the sites I play on - Stars, GG, Party - none have expanded into the global market as of this weekend but I don't see how these sites will be able to allow Ontario players the choice - it's going to be either or IMO. Interestingly to see how this pans out over the next few months.

I guess pool migrations take some time and effort to carry out and no, most very likely there will be no choice and as soon as everything is clear and done there will be no ring fenced pool anymore (should they realy be allowed back in the international pool).

Doing some research locally, the only change that has occurred is a provincial court ruling that started it works be lawful for platforms to host peer to peer poker games with players outside Canada

This could be appealed to the Supreme Court of Canada, Ontario works then need to negotiate agreements with the licensed operators, and then they would need to update software to allow Ontario players back into the pool.

Realistically, this will take months, possibly even into 2027 before anything changes for players.

Exciting news but I could see players feeling both ways about it.

As mentioned by orifice, some regs had been able to move up and made more money while being in the closed ring.

Positive will be more options once again to play on numerous different sites.

I'm from BC but looking forward to seeing what more people from Ontario think.

P.S. I'm happy, pools like Stars and GG might be a little softer now that Canada's biggest province will be swimming in the deep blue international seas again.

I was just reading about that recently, interesting for sure! I logged into Party Poker ON and Pokerstars ON and no changes have been made and I haven't got any emails about that yet.

I'm personally excited for the change as sit and go's are virtually dead on both sites and those have always been my favourite to play. What's interesting is sites like ACR and Betonline still allowed me to play with the rest of the world, I guess those sites don't abide by the laws lol.

Hopefully makes the global pool a bit softer, both due to the fish and the regs who probably overestimate their ability having only played in a ring fenced pool

It’ll be really interesting to see if players get a choice between pools or are fully merged back in. Either way, the Ontario regs who adapted during the fenced period might be in a strong spot now.

Dammit I was kinda hoping for a Canadian wide geo-fenced and regulated player pool to develop and come out of Ontario being geo-fenced. If Poker Orifice is right(not questioning you as I also heard the same) and that Ontario players got to move up in stakes it'd likely be better off for Canadians and anyone in Ontario over an International pool. Cause not only the regs got to move a bit in stakes the decent-good rec/hobby players like myself would get a bumped up in stakes too replace them regs that moved up.

It'll be interesting to see how this develops.

Cheers!!!
