PokerStars has launched two new Hold ’em variants in an effort to generate more action. Going live on Nov. 20, Deep Water Hold ’em and Tempest Hold ’em are PokerStars’ latest attempt to attract their customers.

Let us know if you have tried either of these and what you thought.

Well, I can tell you that it was good for me to play tempest especially because my bankroll was dying and I had 1 $ left and I said let's try this, you only have two options to go all in or retire and if you feel lucky and want to try what it is to be a fish Well, it's your thing, hahaha, proving it with the dollar that I had left, I managed to win several all in a row and increase the bankroll to $ 6 but just as you can win fast you can go to 0 in just one bad step

They get my cash in one minor tournament Shells, otherwise I will stick with ACR where I feel more comfortable and believe we get a fair go.

Well, I checked out both new variants-I should note observed, not played- and could literally not understand what was going on.

It's play money, people were playing in a ridiculously wild manner (just like they do in the lowest play money stakes) and evidently no one was trying to learn or grasp either game in a serious manner. After a minute or two I could no longer be bothered to watch as I wasn't learning a thing.

Of course I could be stupid and missing the point. None of these ideas, new models, are about developing a strategic, think man's game. I am sure the intention is to grab a crowd that wants little more than to coin flip.

I promised myself I would go back and have another look, but honestly, I am not sure it is worth it...

I have to agree with DS. I couldn't understand what was going on. I watched 100k play money games and there was no rhyme or reason as to why they were all throwing in chips. I just didn't get it. And honestly, if I don't understand even a hint of what they are doing with this variant it certainly will not interest me at all.

Hi guys and gals!

I think the important take away is that there is an effort to mix things up a bit by giving a choice of variants. I tried them both and did okay.

Tempest is wild of course and perfect for the gun slingers and those who are on tilt. If you go card dead for a bit, you feel like you are giving away money because of the blinds and antes. It forces quite a bit of action because of this.

Deep Water is closer to the normal game with a great blind which is twice the big blind. So there is more money in the pot and players get to somewhat vary their bet sizing to suit. Of course, level headed players will prefer deep water and the wild ones Tempest.

Both games pick up the pace a bit and may get a following. I still think rush poker is the best idea of them all but appreciate their effort to reach further into our pockets :).

There is no harm in grabbing some play money and getting there. It should clarify things a bit since the software guides you.

Go have some fun :) !

To me, this seems like a desperate move to invent something new. Previously, such things were done to the satisfaction of the players and today only to take money from the same players ..

I know it kind of seems like they are desperate to change things up, but I truly believe they are trying to keep things interesting - they don't want their patrons bored when playing on their site. They are spending the time to create something interesting and hope that it catches on. So far this one does not pique my interest but doesn't mean it doesn't for someone else.

I'm sure this is not the end of their inventiveness.

Thanks for the encouragement redboy23, but, just not really my cup of tea! I have a considerable pile of play money chips but like to enter MTTs to practice. Glad to hear that someone is enjoying them.

I must disagree on this one with you Shell.:icon_stud
As i have played both.
This is nothing more than pokerstars trying to mix up things to get more rake.
Did you guys ever calculate the rake?
Well i did and it is embarrassingly very high imo

And the fun of poker is going away when you play tempest.
You can't play strategically or even bluff your opponents away.
When you go allin it is more money for the house, because the pots are bigger.
So full rake:eek:

Of course i must say the bingo-players are very fond of this, thinking:rolleyes: that it is in their favor:D
But in the end it is the house that has the biggest laugh:elefant::D

This is not wrong...they do these new variants to create interest AND make more money for themselves. BUT, if this variant does not take off, they will continue to invent new ways to take our money, right?! :)

Right now it's one state at a time and some states may never see it again.
