PokerStars login and update issues!!!

I recently tried to install the Pokerstars room as i found out that is one of the leading rooms around.The problem is that when it opens it tries to connect itself and after a while a pop up appears mentioning something about an error -2/-79.As i tried to contact them,they didn't offer me a satisfactory solution.
Was this thing ever happened to you?

P.S I have a new laptop with vista installed and I'm using ESET smart security as a firewall

I have never had a problem connecting to PokerStars except when I have been connecting wirelessly and the connection drops, but that obviously has nothing to do with PS.
I also use Vista and have a firewall, but not ESET...have you checked your firewall settings?

Here is the advise from the PS website

Unable to connect:

• When I open PokerStars I am unable to update the latest version of the software and connect to the server. I have received one of the following errors: -2/-67, -2/-79, -2/-83, -3/-99 or other error. How do I resolve this to connect to your server and login to my account?

• First, you should restart your computer and power off/on any network equipment you have connected (i.e. modem, router, access points or hubs). If this fails, check your system date/time (located on the Taskbar) to ensure the current date and year is set properly. Next, make sure if you have a firewall or similar software (i.e. proxy or websense filter/parental control) installed it is configured correctly to allow PokerStars to access the Internet.
  
  If the above fails, please contact [email protected]. It would be helpful when contacting us if you provide as many details as possible regarding the problem, and to send us the PokerStars program log files from your computer (PokerStars.log.0, PokerStarsUpdate.log.0, and PokerStarsCommunicate.log.0 if present). To send us the log files, you will need to manually locate them and attach them to an e-mail. Depending on your Operating System the logs will be located in different directories.
  
  For Windows XP and older (C:\Program Files\PokerStars\):

Is this a home or work computer. A work computer is more likely to be accessing through a proxy.

Have you got your firewall set correctly.

Is there any parental software on the machine.

These are the 3 most probable causes

Try disabling the firewall fro a few minutes and connecting with it switched off.

If it works then you know its a firewall issue

Stu has given you tons of excellent advice. You've got to troubleshoot. The usual culprit is the firewall, so that's the first place you should start. If you're worried about disabling it, close Internet Explorer first, if that's what you're using.

I also had the same kind of problem. I disabled the firewall and it works fine.
( I myself did not disabled the firewall, my cousin did)

I use a home computer .I tried innumerable times installing the software after turning off the firewall and nothing happens.Keeps popping up the same error message.No i don't have any parental software installed.I also tried the troubleshoot from the pokerstars site and again in vain....

Are you 100% sure the firewall was off whilst you were trying to connect?

I know it might sound a bit condecending.. but if there is any way you might have got it wrong.. it would account for the problem.

Parental software is obvious.. you either installed it or not.

Proxies aren't a problem on a home computer .. unless you have a virus which is rerouting your internet traffic through a proxy. (pretty unusual though)

Could be your antivirus.

Parental software is obvious.. you either installed it or not.

I was thinking he could uninstall the firewall and try again - if there was a way to reinstall it again. There's a lot of tricky stuff in 'tools/internet options'. It mostly talks refers to websites (i.e. violence, gambling, etc.). Isn't an application different? But to be on the safe side, disable the 'content advisor'.

Anyway, you could also try shutting off the firewall, and then uninstalling & reinstalling Poker Stars, but not sure that would work. First, though, if just disabling the firewall doesn't work, I'd disable the anti-virus too.

The IE content stuff shouldnt be a issue because its an application rather than an IE plugin.

If he is 100% sure the firewall is shut off (and I still think that this is the most likely thing) then the next thing is the antivirus.

Its possible that the AV has classed pokerstars.exe as an 'unwanted program'

So if the AV is then disabled then this lets us see if its the AV blocking it.

Beond that I'm kind of out of ideas. Without more info, we have checked the firewall, the AV and there is no parental software running. There are (or should be ) no proxy issues.

Admin privaleges on the account? perhaps the account dosent have sufficient rights to install or modify the file? screwed file rights such that the account dosnt have the modify right.. im really clutching at straws now.

As other people have said, try the firewall again. You may have two firewalls running(you should always have only one running as two will conflict with each other). Vista comes with a firewall and if you purchased a 3rd party Anti-virus/firewall they may both be running. Vista also has Windows defender running but this should not be the problem. Go into the control panel and check out the parental control panel(vista comes with parental controls). Make sure you account has admin privileges and nothing is blocked. There should also be a little red shield with a x in the middle on the task bar. Open that up(it's the security center) it will show you what firewalls are running and other settings. Turn everything off under the heading "firewall" and "other settings". Then see if it works. If the shield not on the task bar you can reach it by the control panel. From experience, setting up a machine with Vista can be a pain sometimes.

Also, if you have to uninstall PS then reinstall making sure to install it with admin privilege. Right click the install program and hit "Run as administrator"
