*shrugs*

Same was true of Jon Jones when he took the belt off Shogun - the closest to fighting a somebody he ever came before that was probably Ryan Bader. Chris Weidman only really had Demian Maia on his resume before he got his shot at Anderson Silva. Most of the guys on TJ Dillashaw's resume before he fought Barao are lucky to even have wikipedia pages.

There's not a lot of point thinking about it too hard, of course, because we all know at the end of the day McGregor fighting Aldo is a business decision. It's the biggest-money fight the UFC could have made in the division... hell, very possibly in the whole organisation. That's why the call it the fight business.

If you still want to give it some kind of sporting legitimacy though, you could consider that Aldo needed to fight someone. Who else would it have been?

Cub Swanson and Frankie Edgar are the only other real possibilities, given that he's now beaten Chad Mendes twice in the past few years. Of course, Aldo already owns wins over Swanson and Edgar as well. Swanson is coming off a loss (to Edgar) so you couldn't really give him the shot. That just leaves a rematch with Edgar and let's face it, does anyone really expect Aldo-Edgar 2 would go any differently to their first fight?

Any bets for the up coming UFC ? I got a small parlay bet on a 6 fight parlay that I actually think has a good chance in hitting.

Gray Maynard
Liz Carmouche
Clay Guida
Julianna Pena
Dustin Poirier
Chad Mendes

$5 to win $60

And a $5 straight bet on Gray Maynard at even money.

This weekend is one of those cards where most of the fights include at least one person I'm not very familiar with.

I've got a very small bet on Carmouche to win. Don't expect it to be a particularly exciting fight, but I think she's got the advantage with takedowns / grappling and will probably top control her way to a decision win, similar to what Sara McMann did to Murphy.

So apparently Gus seriously considered quitting MMA after Rumble KTFO'd him earlier this year: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/...d-retirement-after-ko-loss-to-anthony-johnson

If he's mentally checking out like that, I soooooo wanna bet big against him in his next fight. Except that he's fighting Teixiera, who's probably equally overrated... *sigh*

I won't be betting on that fight but I think Gus gets the win here. Than goes on to have a higher profile fight with even better odds for us to bet against him in :)

whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?

Gus is the only fighter to come close to beating Jones.

I mean, that last fight was terrible, but it doesn`t change the fact that he`s very good.

I didn't get to watch this event, I just looked up the results.. One away from hitting.

Gray Maynard sure had a rough fall, from the top of the division were he once went to a draw with the champion, Frankie Edgar. To possibly being cut from the UFC with his 4th straight loss.

Gus is the only fighter to come close to beating Jones.

I mean, that last fight was terrible, but it doesn`t change the fact that he`s very good.

Here's the thing. Light heavyweight is a super-shallow division. Dan Henderson, Shogun and Little Nog are all still ranked in the top 15 for crying out loud. If Rampage actually gets cleared to fight again in the UFC you know he'll be in the rankings right away.

Hell, Rashad Evans is still ranked #4, even though he hasn't fought in forever and in the past three years his only wins have been over natural middleweights who should have retired (Sonnen, Hendo). I don't argue that he's a good fighter and I'm looking forward to having him come back but seriously - if you take 18 months out of competition and you're still up top in the rankings, you're fighting in a pretty poor division.

Which brings us to Gus. He beat a bunch of nobodies and has-beens, because that's what LHW is full of, to get his title shot. He gets beat. I think people give him way too much credit in the wake of the Jones fight for "coming close"... but I'm from the camp that think Jones prob won that fight 49-46.

After that he beats another can, then gets KTFO by Johnson, has a cry and thinks about quitting the sport altogether.

He's a very good striker with solid takedown defense. But no real KO power (not in the way a guy like Rumble has it), not much of a ground game and he doesn't seem to be much of a game planner. Put that skill set in a competitive division, like lightweight or welterweight, and I think he probably struggles to hang around the bottom half of the top 10.

Nope, I didn't get to see the Cro Cop fight yet. Read up on it though, and I hate to say it but it sounds like his "plan" going forward is just to have lots of slow, boring fights. That certainly sounds like the best chance for him to get wins now that he's older and slower, but I don't think it's gonna translate into entertaining fights for the viewers :(

On a different note, anyone got any thoughts on the chances of Felice Herrig and Max Holloway winning this weekend?

Or Machida, for that matter? Betting his fights always makes me a bit nervous, I'm a huge fan of Machida from a technical standpoint, but against top-flight competition like Rockhold his style sets him up to lose decisions...

It wasn't easy, but Mirko Cro Cop Filipović got his revenge ,one of the oldest lions in mixed martial arts had another shining moment. :)
Before we go any further, for some reason, CroCop is the last fighter I want to see lose... :D ...So, mee and number of fans looking to see a co-main event rematch (3rounds, that's way :D) = Cro Cop vs Minotauro 2

The Cro Cop / Gonzaga fight end up being fight of the night. Cro-Crop looked good ( not stiff and nervous looking like in his previous UFC stints )
even though he was losing up until the stoppage

He should pick his next fights carefully. Nog like the poster above mentions. Mir rematch is another one he has a chance in winning. Although the first fight wasn't all that great.

I read he has two fights left on his contract and he wants one of them to be Nelson... I don't think that is a smart pick. And Nog was his other pick.

Those are tough fights to bet on. I think Felice will get the win but the other two I am not sure about. Good Luck.

To be fair though, being fight of the night on that card is kinda like Stephen Curry winning the three-pointer contest at your local school fair - it wasn't exactly a stellar card :p

I finally got around to tracking down some Paige Van Zandt film last night and rewatched a few Herrig fights. Eh, I'm maybe leaning no-bet there now. Van Zandt pushes a pretty quick pace, has a good clinch and a very active ground game so I'm starting to think that one's priced about right...

It did occur to me that I might have been a bit unfair to Machida, based on his LHW run. Watched a more of his middleweight film last night and I think he's changed his style since dropping down to get a bit more aggressive, which is a good thing from a winning decisions standpoint. Still hard to say how that's gonna play out against an excellent fighter like Rockhold though.

Sometimes the most underwhelming cards on paper are the most exciting to watch. I am not saying that the past event was one of those times. The main event certainly entertained me.

They are hard fights to bet on. I have no Idea who will win Machida or Rockhold. I guess if I had to pick I would go with Machida. And even as I type that I am picturing Rockhold getting the win.

That is a good signing by Bellator and a good move by Phil Davis. He has a good chance in holding the Bellator Belt.

The female fight on fox last night was the most entertaining female fight I have seen and not been watching on World Star Hip-hop. Not very technical but scrappy and entertaining. Machida just got dominated and broken. The grappling the earlier fight was great too. Overall I think this was a great card for a fox fight night.

I ended up putting a small bet on Vanzant - there was a heap of betting late on Herrig, which pushed Vanzant's price up where I thought there was a little bit of value on her at $1.86. Turns out there was a lot of value there LOL.

Then proceeded to lose betting on Machida, I thought he'd be a coinflip or better but he didn't even get close.

Small loss overall on the card.

A small loss isn't so bad. It was a tough card to bet on. Just like the up coming event, I might opt out of making any bets.
