Add-on in poker tournaments

When is it correct to add-on in an online poker tournament?
I've heard somewhere that you should always add on no matter the circumstances. Is this the correct way to procced? I mean if i am close to short stacked and I'm away from the money should i still add on?

it matters how many big blinds the add on is and how deep the tournament is but its almost always worth it.

In general, don't play a tournament with an add-on unless you're prepared to take it. In order not to, the circumstances should be pretty unusual, like taking it would still leave you severely short-stacked.

I don't play tournaments with add-ons. But if you are playing one, it doesn't make sense not to add-on, beacuse the chances are that everyone else is going to and then you are at a disadvantage. It's the same with re-buy tournaments, expect to re-buy at least once because people are willing to go all in and try and double up, knowing they can re-buy if it fails and try again. I generally just stick with the no rebuy, no add-on tournaments and grind it out.

I think, that it all depends from the beginning of tournament,if you succeed to hold a middle stack or better,then addon is not needed. I recently won a 3.5 + R without any addon. Сertainly with a large stack feel more confidently, but I was oriented on a middle stack.IMHO.....

Neither do I, I hate 'em.

Around here, the VAST majority what few live games there are are all $50 BI, Rebuy for the first 30 mins, and then 5 allowable AddOns, $10 for not sure how many chips.

I've been told people with too much money will go in there and play like a moron for the first 30 minutes, and after a few rebuys will buy in a last time and add the max.

And I don't see the game being much different online as that live way of playing.

Always take the add on and if it's a re Buy then i will take that as well.. I want to have as big a stack as possible to get max value from my good hand's

It only depends if your intentions are to min cash...If your intentions are to win then why would want to give your opponents an advantage by not adding on.

Agree it's silly not to take the add-on if it's available. In the $1 rebuy on Stars the add-on for $1 is about as much as the average chipstack, not taking it is a big disadvantage unless you have an enormous stack.

Depends. Sometimes the add-on is huge and cheap, so you almost always want to take it. Sometimes the add-on is expensive and small relative to your stack, so it is minus EV to take it. Have to think about each tournament differently to see whether taking the add-on makes sense

Thats why I said "it depends", above. Im just giving sample scenarios whether to take add on or not. But others will answer, always take the add-on no matter what.

If I have near average stack size or better, I tend to skip the add-on.

Im usually not playing tournaments with r/a , and the rarely cases that I do they are limited. I would add-on if I'm below the average stack, otherwise it just dont seem that important to me. Sometimes I add-on just to have some equity for coinflips, if I win - I move forward, if not - Ive wasted a few dollars. Dont know when is the right time to do this, but I'd suggest if your bankroll can take a hit from re-buys, better play Freezeouts. Before I play such tournament I would make a few calculations - will I be coinflipping a lot early, how much money exactly can I put aside for that tournament. Are the prizes big enough to worth the money spent for r/a.

theres one I sometimes play on bovada were the buy in is like $ 1.10 for 1500 chips then the add on at the end of late reg is $1.00 for additional 6000 chips so the first hour is useless really first time I played it I did great the first hour I had like 8000 chips skipped the add on and everyone at the table was under 2000 chips then was right there with me after the add on .I didn't know you got so many I was pissed oh well.
there is another one at bovadacalled the action hour were the blinds go up every 2 minutes I think then after the first hour theyre like up to a grand and the field is real small then at the break tons of people jump in and the blinds go down to like 100 or 200 I think that's a messed game

on some turbo r/a they start out with 500 chips with a 2k add on,by the time you get to the addon averange stack is at 10k,if im above that I skip the addon.
theres others that start you with 3k chipstack and a 20k add on on these ones its almost mandatory to add on

I don't care for them really either.i would prefer no reentry or add on that's why I don't do tournys at bcp and acr every tournys got like 3 hours late reg and rebuy.
. a lot of times those are the cheaper tourneys though if you got a small bankroll its why I play some of them but if you look at the final table it usually doesn't have to many people that rebuy they are the ones funding it :bootyshak

When I played on bet on line the add on would be about 5 times the rebuy as a tourney strategy I would play super tight try to make it to the break and then add on ,after the break it's basically a freeze out tourney with a lot of dead money from people busting out before the break ,the add on would put you in about half to a third of the table leader which is plenty in no limit.Whatever tourney you go in see if this is case ,see how much there giving for the add on.

You almoust always have to buy addons. When you register to an addon tournament, always calculate it. Moreover, addons are usually big enough comparing to the average stacks.

The only time I would skip an add on is if you have a very sizable chip lead, and you will maintain a solid lead if everyone else buys the add on. Other than that, the add on is a must, and it's not a decision that needs a lot of thought. Even if you had a massive chip lead, I don't think it would be wrong to buy the add on, just not necessary.

I guess it depends on what situation you come upon add-on. If you put the chips give you a good chance to go far to do. Otherwise, if even with the add-on you get short stack, you should not do.
However, in most cases, it is valid to do so.

To me it depends on what percentage of my current chipstack is represented by the add on.

If there is a significant enough boost relative to my current stack, it's automatic.

Am going to host a poker night next week and the buyin will be 5 dollars 8 players... I want to add rebuys and add-ons.

Please help me with the structure,l; what should the starting stack be? Add-on be?

I did add on when I played the wcool satellite hyperturbo freeroll where there were 10 prizes. For 11 ¢ he added 50,000 chips to the stack and won a ticket for $ 2.20 wcoop
