Do You Ever Intentionally Avoid Coin Flip Situations Early in Tournaments?

Something I’ve been thinking about in tournaments is how often players take coin flip spots early on. hands like AK vs QQ or small pairs vs overcards come up a lot, and technically they can be profitable in the long run. But early in a tournament when stacks are deep, sometimes it feels better to avoid those high-variance spots and wait for a clearer edge. On the other hand, passing on those opportunities might mean missing chances to build a big stack. I’m curious how others approach this. Do you take those early coin flips when they come up, or do you try to avoid them until later stages of the tournament?

I hate going in blind.. like I toss away some crazy cards especially online.. coin flips only at the end for me. Most of the time in a bigger field tourney I’ll toss JJ away before the pays all in pre flop.. it depends on who’s all on and how the table is.. tilt but yeah not often do k toss em all in without the nuts

If I have AK and the tournament is just starting, I probably won't play that hand that way, but if I have AA or KK I'll call.

Yes, I usually avoid marginal coin flips early in MTTs.

Early stages have low blinds, so there’s no need to take high-variance spots.
Preserving your stack is more valuable than gambling for a small edge.
I’ll take flips only if there’s a clear edge or special reason.
Better to build chips steadily and take bigger risks later.
