What are the most common mistakes you see in first-time tournament players and how to avoid them?

Good question but is a lot of them like these:
  1. Playing too many hands early
Mistake: wanting to enter many pots right at the beginning.
How to avoid it: be patient. In the early levels, prioritize strong hands and good position.
  2. Not understanding the tournament structure
Mistake: playing as if it were a cash game, ignoring blinds, antes, and tournament phases.
How to avoid it: study the structure (blinds, antes, re-entries) and adjust your strategy to each stage.
  3. Ignoring table position
Mistake: playing the same hands out of position as in position.
How to avoid it: play more hands in late position (cutoff and button) and be tighter out of position.
  4. Poor stack management
Mistake: not knowing how to play with short or medium stacks.
How to avoid it: learn basic concepts such as effective stack size, push/fold, and ICM.

  5. Mistake: calling bets “just to see” what the opponent has.
How to avoid it: every decision should have a clear purpose (value, bluff, or equity).

  6. Mistake: losing emotional control after a bad hand.
How to avoid it: accept poker variance and focus on making good decisions, not short-term results.

  7. Mistake: playing only your own cards.
How to avoid it: observe patterns, bet sizing, bluff frequency, and opponents’ behavior.

  8. Mistake: bluffing excessively against players who don’t like to fold.
How to avoid it: in early tournaments, focus on value betting; bluffs work better against attentive players.
  9. Lack of tournament planning
Mistake: playing while tired, unfocused, or for too long.
How to avoid it: plan your schedule, breaks, and number of tournaments to stay sharp.
  10. Underestimating the psychological aspect
Mistake: thinking poker is only about math.
How to avoid it: work on discipline, patience, and emotional control as much as technical skills.

I think the most common mistake beginners make is playing every hand. Beginners try to win every hand, and that is probably their most common mistake.

Don't focus on maintaining your starting stack and play tighter before the bubble when you're short-stacked.If you have a deep stack, then before the bubble or before a large gap between subsequent prizes, you should open wider to take dead money from short players, who most often will not allow themselves to call you.

I often see beginners overestimate the power of an ace with a weak kicker, and I also see the mistake of players leaving a position with useless cards after a 3-bet call in the hope of catching something.
