The tournament bubble always seems to create interesting situations because some players tighten up a lot while others try to take advantage of that.

Personally I find it to be one of the most strategic parts of a tournament because stack sizes and player tendencies really start to matter.

How do you usually adjust your play when the bubble is approaching?

If you have 30 bb or more chips, press at the time of the bubble to position yourself well for the final stage

It depends on my situation in each tournament.

If I'm the table chip leader, I'm going to try to exert pressure on my opponents. Particularly targeting the middle stacks and those that show clear signs of tight passivity.

If I'm the middle stack, I will try to avoid the big stack whilst trying to put pressure on the other medium stacks and smaller stacks.

If I'm the smaller stack, I will be keeping a close on the tournament situation and how close I am to the bubble. I will stall and try to limp into the money, or if it doesn't look like I will make it, just pick a spot and go with it.

Near the bubble, I become more situational and pressure-focused.

If I have a big stack, I play more aggressive and target medium stacks who are trying to survive.
With a medium stack, I tighten up and avoid risky spots without strong hands.

Short stacks should look for good shove spots before getting blinded out.

Overall, it’s about understanding who is playing scared and adjusting accordingly.

When I get closer to the “bubble,” my strategy changes significantly. I understand that it’s not just about chips anymore — making it into the money is on the line — so I start playing more tightly and cautiously.
I try not to call or shove with marginal hands, because one wrong move can knock me out just before the payouts. Instead, I look for situations with a high chance of success: shoving with strong hands, broadway cards, or pocket pairs where the probability of winning the pot is high.
If I notice opponents clearly scared to take risks, I can use that to my advantage — making aggressive bets and raises to take pots without a showdown. But I’m always careful not to overdo it and get caught.
In general, closer to the bubble, I focus on preserving my stack, accumulating chips where I can, and avoiding unnecessary risks, because my priority is to make it into the money first, and only then think about big wins.

The bubble is one of the most interesting stages in tournaments.

Some players become very tight, while others take advantage and play more aggressively.

What’s your strategy near the bubble?

The bubble is where the "real" tournament players separate themselves from the field. Honestly, my biggest adjustment is realizing that ICM (Independent Chip Model) is the only thing that matters. You have to stop thinking about chips and start thinking about the actual dollar value of those chips.

Since it’s a “new” phase during the tournament, with players often changing their style (sometimes a lot) as they approach the money, I usually adjust my game at that point instead of sticking to my initial strategy.

The bubble is honestly one of my favorite stages in a tournament, because it's where the biggest edges are available — if you're willing to apply pressure.

My strategy near the bubble shifts significantly toward aggression, and the reasoning is purely based on ICM dynamics. When players are desperate to secure a min-cash, they tighten up dramatically. Short and medium stacks start folding hands they'd normally play, avoiding confrontations at all costs. That fear is exploitable, and if you have a healthy stack, you'd be leaving a lot of value on the table by not taking advantage of it.

What I focus on near the bubble: I target the medium stacks specifically. Big stacks can call me off without risking their tournament life, and short stacks are often pot-committed anyway. But medium stacks — the ones with just enough chips to make it through but too many to shove recklessly — are in the most uncomfortable spot. They're the ones most likely to fold to pressure.

I also pay close attention to position and table dynamics. Stealing blinds from late position becomes extremely profitable near the bubble, especially against players who are visibly tightening up. A well-timed 3-bet or a continuation bet on a dry board can pick up a lot of uncontested pots.

That said, aggression near the bubble doesn't mean recklessness. I'm still folding marginal hands in bad spots and avoiding flipping for my tournament life without a strong reason. The goal is controlled, calculated aggression — not gambling.

I bend myself into a pretzel to be sure I can get past the bubble. After making the bubble, only then do I feel comfy going for the win.
