I am playing more and more online tournaments and I notice that chip management at the first levels makes a lot of difference. I try not to risk too much at the start to get more solid in the middle stages. What strategy do you prefer at the first levels of a tournament?

Yes, this is the exact right strategy, because there are a lot of players in the early stages, who just do not care, play for fun or simply big amateuers. Su survival in the frist hour is key. After that you can play more let's say, reliably.

gather information about the table
don’t lose your stack
don’t try to become the chip leader right away

You don’t want to get too crazy early in the tournament. Look for a good spot to play especially when you are in position. Because it gets crazy later in the tournament.
