Online vs Live MTT Strategy – Key Differences?

I mainly play online MTTs, and I feel the biggest difference between online and live tournaments is the pace and player tendencies. Online games are much faster and more aggressive, especially in late stages, so I focus a lot on push/fold charts and short stack adjustments.

In live MTTs, I think patience and observation become more important because players tend to be less aggressive and give more physical timing tells.

Do you guys adjust your opening ranges differently when switching between live and online play?

Spot on. The biggest difference is the boredom factor. Live is so slow that people just want to see flops.

If you open 2x or 2.2x like online, you'll get 5 callers and play bingo every hand. To actually isolate, you have to size up to 3x, 4x, or even 5x. Since you're risking more chips preflop just to thin the field, you have to tighten up your early position ranges. Opening stuff like KJo UTG is a great way to bleed your stack multi-way.

But from late position, you can actually play a bit wider. Live players are passive and rarely 3-bet squeeze light, so over-limping or calling cheap with small pairs and suited connectors works great. When you hit a set live against a guy who refuses to fold top pair, the implied odds are huge
