However, poker is a lot more than just winning some online cash games. The big stakes are all about the experience in games and what you've seen. While they may not want you to play, this would be a good time to learn as much as you can about the game.

Watch the good players and how they play. Read books on living a poker lifestyle. Study what it really takes to make poker a major part of your life. It's not just the game, it's the kind of things you need to know on how to be successful. Learn all that you can so that you know if it's right for you. I would definitely suggest books, because that's what helped me learn what I needed to know.

As far as your family, the best you can do is respect their wishes as much as you can until you truly know if this is something for you. There's tons of games you can play for free to practice.

I wish you the best of luck my friend. I'm now playing semi-professionally after 8 years playing in the circuits, including 2 1/2 years in Las Vegas in small stake tournaments.
