I have only ever heard of highly successful people that have taken that sort of devotion to anything. I have never heard of a failure that has, thats not to say they don't exist they may very well exist. but the reality is anyone who is putting that much effort into anything is far to busy to have much time if any for me or almost anyone else for that matter. so I don't know of them I only hear of famous people with this mentality. people that have made it. its a positive sample bias and it leaves me with no meaningful way to comment reliably on how likely any one individual taking this stance is likely to achieve world class standard. In order to achieve world class you have to have the belief in yourself i agree with that. and someone has to be there so why couldn't it be you me or etc. However, belief is not the only requirement to success, belief on its own will get you no where. I can;t be as good as Phil Ivey by simply believing it. you say I cant judge you I am going to make some assumptions about you assumptions which are highly likely to be untrue. The reason is I want to give you as many mitigating factors as i possibly can only to illustrate the point. I will assume that your wife has some horrible life threatening disease, which has torn your family apart and put you through hell. that you have one child with severe autism and another with down syndrome. that you used to rely on your wife to help with income as you were both working now with her bed ridden in hospital you find yourself having to work a 70 hour+ week just to keep your family financially alive and pay for the medical bills. its not just labor that is required though you need to be there to help your family as a father and a husband.you are desperate to make it big in poker in order to save your family but due to the harsh circumstances you can only play/study for three hours a day. I assume that's highly unlikely to be your circumstances but assuming it is, it doesn't change the fact 3 hours a day wont make you world class you wont ever get you to the standard Phil ivey is at. you can hate me for pointing this out but its a fact. In order to be world class at anything you need extreme devotion and its not just working hard as much as you can within the confines of your responsibilities. no magic fairy is going to come and magically make it so because you tried as hard as could reasonably be expected given your circumstances. the fact is the more time you put in the more you can learn and the higher standards you can reach. if you really think you could ever match the level Phil has reached with anything less then 8 hours a day of dedication then your sadly mistaken. if you believe that you could match Phil Ivey if you put in 8 hours+ of time a day into poker then you might be right, who really knows? you were right earlier when you said its not just about quantity its quality too. but that doesn't mean quantity isn't important. to make it to world class level you need huge quantities of top quality study and effort. those that say they cant reach the top no matter how hard they work will probably never reach the top as they already set there limit. that doesn't mean though that those that believe they can, will do so simply by believing it. like it or not it would take years of constant study and work matching or exceeding the hours of a full time job to even stand a chance at it. even then you could fail, but heck if you truly did top quality study with those kind of hours I am almost certain you would be highly successful maybe not world class who knows though. you wont ever get there without that. you may have decent success maybe even a six figure income with less but youd never get to world class level with anything less. many people most people lack all of the following to achieve that 1. the opportunity few actually have the opportunity to put that much into it they have other commitments and responsibilities 2.the drive and will power to make that sort of effort. 3. to make the sacrifices giving up a social life friends family time and relationships for that. its harsh but true thats what it takes. note I may be wrong but I don't think Ivey was getting any when he was sleeping rough. its not as if me saying you can and will be the worlds best will suddenly make you beat $40,000 NL or the $1000 six max hypers. if you want to live in denial of that then you will never make it.
