Thanks fowks for your replies.

Its just I've been having a sick run on Bodog lately and doubling my stack up quite a few times.

I just didnt want to pee everyone off by taking their money and legging it if you know what I mean, so what I do is sit on the table a couple of circuits fold and only play premium hands if I get them, before making a nice polite excuse that I've got to go..

No one seems to have objected so far..

Honestly though.... even if someone were to ask me to stick around (online) I'd still go to another table. Nobody's doing me any favors online, and there's no way that I'm going to try and make someone else happy. When I login to whatever poker client/s I'm going to be playing on... I've got one goal in mind: Win as much of YOUR money as I can. Nobody's ever taken my money, then given it back. I'm not gonna do it. No Sir!

If it was a player I reckognized, I'd be inclined to stick around, but I probably wouldn't

Just watch Phil ivey on FTP.. He hits and runs every single time he plays. In smaller limits.. i would not worry about it, if your playing $100/$200 i would give a 10min warning, then leave :)

Hit and run, take no prisoners! It is a good way to play sometimes...

I don't leave just because Ive won a big pot tho, there may be good reasons to stick around (soft table, heater going on etc.), or to leave (wanna make supper, wanna count my chips and chill, whatever), but not usually simply because I won a pot.

Live play is different of course, especially home games.

that is the reason you play ring games to came and go as you please me personally I would leave the table because of my preset limmits. and buy in to anouther table. When I buy inn I have an amount I am going to stand with weather its in one minute or one hour.that is one of the luxuries of playing online. You can move from table to table with out sitting out.

Why would you give someone else a "chance to win it back"... you came to that table for one reason... to win money!

Its your choice. Sometimes if you feel like you need to protect your winning leave and buy back in at another table but if I'm running hot I really don't want to leave. I just try to play a little tighter in order to keep my winnings. Having a big stack does give you the means to take advantage of the big hands when they do come whereas if your short you limit the amount you can win..

I can just see a guy at a casino running table to table winning one hand at each.

I do this every night.

Online you can leave whenever you want.

Here's one bit though:

Leaving the table and coming back with less chips (referred to as "going south") is considered bad etiquette.

You can't come back to the same table with less duckets than you left with for at least one hour in the casino's I play at.

You leave, when you want to, the question is " did the oppnent give you a chance to win your money back when you lose"? I don't think so. Everybody who plays on cashtables know what the risk is to play cash. I means, you can come when you want and you can go when you want.

The title of this thread is about poker etiquette. So it is clear he is talking about Scotty's etiquette and the way he conducted himself at the table, and not about how much he won...

I don't have a problem with Scotty's etiquette, and I don't see where etiquette has anything to do with poker. It's poker, and you (or I) don't have a say so in how a person conducts his/herself. As long as I pay my entry and I have my privates covered, I'm good. (a very good rule indeed  )

Maybe it sucks for all the new folks (web players) to the game. But drunk and obstinate winners have been a mainstay of this game for years.

As I said before. This kid had a good butt whipping coming. TV cut in at the wrong time. If they had cut in earlier all would see what he was like. Scotty did what gets done to a little brat like that. Don't you guys get it? I's hard to believe you don't.

If you get a chance to see (or read about) some of that crap, the stuff which ultimately lit Scotty's fuse, then you would understand. The kid was a brat. EVERYBODY WAS PISSED OFF AT HIM. Eric Lindgren castigated the brat for the same reason just before the TV coverage cut in. I'd be interested to hear what you have to say about this conduct. Should over zealous and in your face celebrations be allowed? I personally have no problem with that either. But the puritans amongts us might have a thing to say.

Scotty was drunk. Yes. Now........ I don't drink, but I've heard that if your drunk at 4 am, the worst thing you can do is stop drinking. If you want to keep going anyway. Alas, you get drunker. WHAT CHOICE DID HE HAVE AT THAT POINT?

So, it was ugly. It was what I've been sitting around the table with for years. You guys whom play on line think this is an atiseptic game. It isn't. It's populated in real life by kooks, drunks, loosers, winners, nice folks, idiots, sharp dressers and sloppy ones. And the beauty of this game is that we can play no matter what we do which may irratate other people. If I have the money, I have a seat.

Think about how it used to be. You might be stuck next to some guy with a cheap cigar. A loud bligerant drunk with a cheap cigar.

You europeans will understand when I say. Please keep the puritans out of poker. They screw up everything they touch. :(

I couldn't care less how he conducts himself, to be honest. I was simply saying that the comment you replied to was not results related but behavioural related. The simple fact is he lost the respect of a lot of people, winning $1m+ that night doesn't make a difference to the opinions of people who no longer respect him.

Also, as a person who really only plays live poker, I see people acting like that all the time. It doesn't bother me, I am quite thick skinned, and I sometimes even find it comical. But everyone see's these things differently I suppose.

But I disagree where you say etiquette doesn't have anything to do with poker. I think live it does, as actions which breach common "poker etiquette", can and often will lead to restrictions by a tournament director.

You then also get into the fact that you are sat in front of your opponent. If someone has been completely out of order then they will, more than likely, have someone 'waiting' for them outside the casino.

If that's your main concern than quit the game and find something else. Poker is a diabolical game to take money away. If you think you might start to lose, RUN don't walk. Everybody at the table wants your money not your company. Wise up sucker

When playing in ring games, if you get a nice tidy win off a hand, is it bad form to then leave the table without giving your opponent the chance to win it back from you ?

I really dont have a clue what the general concensus is on this one.

personally i would choose to stay untill the cards started to run cold. once the cards start to run cold i would tell everyone nice game or good luck something of that nature. but i beleive it would be personal preference as to stay or go. i have seen it done many a times but like i said i would stay till the cards run cold then i would get up and leave.

Nobody can chain you to the table so far when playing a cash game. You won it, good for you, it's all yours now and you don't have to be wondering about such a thing. If so, why don't you try to give the chips back to your oponents when you suck out the river, lol.

Take all that you can and give nothing back.

People may be smiling and chatting and being sociable and all that at the felt, but make no mistake...poker is a blood sport. Someone wins...someone loses.

Be the winner.

I think it is fine to leave the table. Sometimes you just have to take your money and run!!!
