The Ace of Spades

Doesn't it seem the beginner to intermediate player sseem to play the Ace of Spades regardless of what the kicker is? They have this belief that the Ace of Spades has a higher percentage of winning that the other Aces (at least some poker players I know). To me, it seems more of a superstitution. Do you know any players like this?

I have never heard of that before. That is really wierd, I wonder if anyone on here plays the Ace of spades like that. I play all my A-x the same, usually fold.

At low limits, you can bank on anyone playing Ax all the way to the river. ESPECIALLY if they hit their Ace. Whats worse is big hands like AK lose quite often at low limits to Ax because Ax pairs the kicker more often than you'd like it to... Of course, they have the same odds to pair their 4 as you have to pair your K, but unfortunately, they play the Ax, and their kickers are going to be random, while a strong players kicker will almost always be J,Q, or K, which gives them a little more chance to be lucky - as you never will know which one they play. On the bright side, when they DON'T hit their kicker, they pay you off nicely.

I've never heard of this (except maybe for unconverted bridge players).

BUT! In a number of books, David Sklansky talks about randomizing play to confuse apponents. Sklansky's advice is not to try and do the randomization yourself, humans tend to fall into predictable patterns. Rather let the cards randomize your play.

For example most players would raise with AA but what if you wanted to occasionally limp in to confuse opponents? Well you could say to yourself "whenever I have the black aces I'm limping in, otherwise I'll bring it in for a raise". The cards themselves randomize your play.

Maybe t1riel you're seeing players doing something like this, either consciously or unconsciously (and the latter is more likely). Coming in with the Ace of Spades under any situation.

Funny you should say that but a superstition i have is pkt red 7s simply because its the hand that won me my first mtt and hasn't let me down since.But as for the ace of spades it seems to be the most ornate card in the deck and i guess that's why people play it.

I've got one for you when I go all in over a smaller stack. If I want them to call me, I push everything out. If I am looking for them to fold I only bet the amount of their stack. I think people subconsciouly think they will win more if the see that big stack against their small stack, where as a 1 to 1 bet makes them think a bit more.

LOL, I actullay do it the other way around(normally, not always). I don't know why, but I seem to get more callers if I bet the amount they have left, rather than move all-in.

By the way, if there were an ace you would always play, it had to be the ace of spades. It is without comparison the most beautyfull card in the deck!

Rather irrelevant here but I have a huge superstition about K8 and K2 (K3 also to a lesser extent) ..... people always bust me out of tournaments holding these hands with miracle flops

Nope,never seen it with A of spades,or at least I haven't noticed it..I on the other hand CANNOT lay down a K 8...makes no sense but when I get it I'm like in a trance

...lol. It has won for me much more often than not so I suppose subconciously that is the reason..

Hehe, thread only 8 months out of date!

This reminds me of when I went through a phase of treating people to renditions of rock numbers like the Ace of Spades through the chat facility on PartyPoker whenever the Ace of Spades turned up. Seemed pretty amusing at the time. Then there was one guy called "Hammer" so I started copying and pasting all these MC Hammer lyrics into the chat box, and making comments like "Please Hammer, don't hurt 'em" whenever he bet. Ahh, good times.

I don't really pay much attention to the suit of the cards pre-flop. I got a bunch of other things I'm thinking about...like position, blinds, tells, opponents playing style, anticipating 'what if' situations. I mean, they're either suited or they're not. I don't prefer hearts over diamonds or spades over clubs.

I think if one is thinking about these types of things you can safely assume he or she is a DONK and they're not really into the game of poker.

Post flop is a whole different story.
