His idea was I want to play the best people possible so I'll take as much money as I can afford to lose and give it a shot.  I think, uhm, Doyle Bruson started grinding at the dollar stakes for his bankroll as pro.

BRM is very importance because it allows the beginner to measure their performance.  The bankroll is NOT the guarantee of performance over the short term but over the longer term it is the best indicator of performance.  You can read something but the only way to know for sure is to track your performance.  Of course, something like Sklansky bucks are also important to consider when experiencing downswings or upswings in the bankroll.

I do agree that someone should start with as much money as they are comfortable with -- for me that was $50.  For some people that is $0.. 
Some people are willing to spend more on their hobbies then others.

I think the BRM is the MOST important factor though when thinking about it BECAUSE it provides the most direct evidence of performance ALTHOUGH it is not a complete picture.

So, I'd say measuring and tracking performance is the most important thing to do and BRM is a part of that. :)
