I personally would say no more than 50 dollar buy in at a table. and as far as a tourney 10 to 15 dollars is max.

But what do you do when you double or triple up at a 50 dollar buy in game.  Do you try to "big boy" with your chip stack or do you get up and re seat yourself and profit 50 to 100 bucks?
I think it depends on 1. Who your playing with personality wise whether some are rage tilting or bluffing to often or think you have them figured out 2. what other players have in their stack.

i like to get up when i hit the 125$ marker or around it at a 50 dollar buy in table or 150% profit..

when it comes to tourneys they are way different. you must be extremely patient and know when you have to lay down a good hand to not risk losing 33% of your chip stack.  I've learned this the hard way.  
I recall 1 tournament i entered with only 30 entries. it payed 4 or 5 places. When there were 15 to 20 people left I had 3 times as many chips as the 2nd man in the tourney at the time. I lost 2 or 3 big hands where i tried to bluff them off and didnt event finish in the money..

What are your thoughts on where Im going wrong.  I know im a decent poker player but just haven't managed to be able to say "hey, slow it down or not that high of stakes, and i go bust.  I think I need someone to watch me play so i make better decisions hahaha
