Well, here's a question for you, how much equity is there with AK vs 89?

Answer: depending on the suits, 89 has ~35-40% equity vs AK's ~65-60% equity preflop. So, that means-again, depending on the suits-, 89 is winning ~2/5 times.

The next question is: what were the effective stack sizes vs the blinds? 89 > AK is pretty meaningless if 89 has 100 BBs behind and AK only has 2 BBs behind as both players are only playing with an effective 2 BB stack.

Your observation is true. But he has two good explanations:
First, the chip leader is a player who plays well or is just lucky today. It happens, you catch your wave and win one hand after another, with any cards .... Then the wave will pass. Pray that it will be enough for the rest of the tournament.
Secondly, any two cards have non-zero chances against any other two cards, even against AA. A chip leader with a really large stack can afford to lose one or two exposures to a short stack, but will win the third and take all the chips.

Your opinion is based on 5-10, well, a maximum of 20 hands played, which you saw. If you take the statistics for the full period of any player, you can see that basically the percentage of wins with this or that hand corresponds to mathematical calculations (in cases when the hands were opened). Therefore, do not bother the head with various superstitions. It is possible that there are exceptions to the rules, but if you treat yourself to them, then you already lost in advance, even before the game.

I was for a long time a chip leader in tons of tournaments and I didn't win even half of them. So I don't agree with this statement. Bad beats are always coming

I have been in those situations a lot aswell, but a lot of the time the chip leader feels lucky and calls or maybe he is getting the right price. He has more than 30% equity and so if he has the odds to make a profitable call (not that seldom), he will. And it might end bad for us:/

Both bad beats and lucky wins are coming. You mentioned above a situation with 89 vs AK, where you probably think AK is some huge favorite. Today I lost a hand as chip leader with AQs, one player went all-in with A9o and another player called with JJ. A9 hit a miracle straight tripling his stack, beating both of us who were ahead.
These situations (similar to winning with 89 vs AK) are more likely to happen in chip leader vs shortstack then in a situation with 2 players with similar stack sizes. Therefore, you get the feeling that system favorizes chip leaders but that is hardly true .

Your answer is the most valid, it is true that being a chepleader in some cases you just have to complete the bet and since you have enough chips you pay easily, and more secure when the BB is in most cases the cow pay

CHipleaders tend to play and win more hands which would normally be considered marginal. Generally painful to lose, and therefore more memorable.
