Any 2 cards can win any hand. AK suited is clearly better than not.

They call it, “Walking home to Houston” for a good reason. When the game originated in Texas, Ace King was over valued and bet as such to the point of loosing your vehicle in the pot, hence the above term.
I try my best to stick to the chart below where valuation in methodical.

Start on the right if suited, top if not.

I see so many all-ins at the micro tables with AK get crushed. I completely agree with the not overrated but overplayed line.

Personally big slick is my very favorite starting hand and with so many possibilities for catching something with it inparticaliary if it is a suite d hand the possibilities is somewhat staggering... therefore I always highly value it and will bet accordingly to try to mazimaze the size of the pot and hopefully therefore the win.

I would love a graph of your games.

Not possible, mathamatically you can not loose every time with these hands or any hand for that matter. If this is true you are folding every hand pf or you you've only played a few games.

AKs are very strong preflop but only the flop "tells" how strong they are actually. :)

There are many circumstances that make them more or less valuable preflop. Eg position at the table, folds/calls/raises/reraises/allins before us, amount of our chips, our position in the tournament...

Anyway it's not bad holding AKs in the hand... :p

Chip magnet for sure. It is simply just another two cards post flop and not hitting. It ain't all there talked up to be.

AK is a great overall hand, even better in tournaments. If you run into aces or kings so what? Against all other pairs you're about 50/50. Obviously it's also easy to lose big pots with it, but that means you're probably playing it wrong.

i'm with the mountaineer here. i'll take all bets if you think JQ KQ are better than AK. you have to keep in mind that you just happen to remember when you LOSE with it more times than you with it. i'm raise and re-raise you preflop with it till we're all in, i'm not scared of QQ or KK with my AK, whatever..just don't wanna see AA...but still, i had AK so let's dance. i'm no post flop master, but its not a difficult hand to play post flop. you should get a pretty decent read on your opponents and you're most likely dominating them even if that donk called with a J6 and hit his 6, you might can still get him to lay it down, or know its time to just keep that pot small or get out.

IMO

spiderman637 said:
I feel the Big slick is the most overrated hand which often overplayed. its a drawing hand and even behind any pair heads up.also against weaker hands its 2:1 favorite. do u want to goto war just with that? I know its always easier to isolate while having Big Slick but I wouldn't go all in with it early in the tournament. maybe even blinds are high and its short handed I would go All In with it. However it always plays good against weaker Ace. so if i feel any player has a tendency to call with Aces I would play AK against that person. what do you guys please about playing Big Slick?:joyman::joyman::joyman:
IMO AK can be over-rated in tournament playing but becomes much more powerful in cash games. While I will play both aggressively I do not like shoving my chips in with AK in tournies because they are much more donk infested. However sitting with 20-50$ will i push it all in with Ak,yes I will because there I win more than lose in the long run and your not a real big dawg to any hand but AA,KK

Below are my graphed ring games results of playing AK su & AK os in bb's won. Below that is the graphed ring games results for winnings per bb's for all pprs - all of them, including AA & KK:
As you can see, I've won more with AK than all pprs combined.
Edit: Note that I have only had HEM for a few weeks so my hh count will not be as high as for others.

Well, no. It's ace high + top kicker. And if you isolated one player pre flop it is STILL the best hand against ATC most of the time.

One of the nicest things about AK is it is a hand that is both EASY (and profitable) to C-bet but also easy to let go of if you need to.

At least it should be.

Here is one other angle on the whole thing... For those of you who take the AK is just A high until it hits philosophy.

If you see AK as a "drawing hand" then you are really only thinking about the hand YOU hold. Until you start taking into account the types of hands your opponent(s) is holding you aren't even really playing the game, but you are letting the game play itself.

Of course you may think you are considering your opponents hands, but most likely only in a "what could beat MY hand" way which is the MOST limited way to see beyond "what do I hold".

If you are looking at the game more holistically you will play AK from start to finish for the strong hand it is worth against the table you are playing and from the position you play it.

Seems to me some simple poker concepts show AK for the powerhand it is.

0. A high is actually the best hand till someone has a pair.
1. AK is way ahead of anything but pairs.
2. Except for two pairs (AA and KK) it is still a cointoss by the river.
3. People don't hit the flop 2 out of 3 times meaning that frequently you are STILL ahead.

So..

Try to play AK in a way that will isolate 1 (or two) players pre flop.
If you don't hit, continue (in most cases) with a bet confident that you may still be ahead on the flop
If you do hit play for value
If you are played back at, consider your opponent in regards to their range and playstyle (as you should already be)
Be prepared to let go of A high or even TPTK.
Profit.

Played badly != over-rated.
