Bubble Etiquette...

Sorry to the OP, but I personally LOATHE the idea of bubble payouts AND "DEALS". It goes against the grain of the game. You get what you earn. Kind of off topic, but I heard one time that the year Dan Harrington won his Main Event, he offered a deal to the final 2 or 3 players, which of course they refused. Can anyone substantiate this? Thanks

I'm kind of shocked that the final table didn't help out the bubble. I was down there in the end of the summer and we had just reached a final table, 94 people and so the final 9 got paid. The tourney was condensed down to one table with the final 10 people remaining, and we all agree'd to give the bubble 10 dollars before the bubble had busted. $100 for a $65 buy in is pretty good, esp when the final table did a full 9-way chop for $565 a piece.

I don't know. I know the feeling of being the bubble boy. Especially in larger tournaments where you've been playing a long time I'd probably be in favor of it. But, I'm probably too much of a softy...

i go twice aweek to the local casino, and this subject has never been brought up the buy-in is usually 65$ for the tournament, i place in the final table most of the time and occasionally im the bubble but never experienced this maybe ill bring it up.

What a dumb idea, bubble means you lose and get 0$ its poker and someone has to be the last person to not cash, i think thats a terrible idea and i will never agree to it

I think why paying the bubble is popular in Cardschat games is because of the money added. Its not a soft bubble where you're only getting 2x buyin or less for a mincash, its often ~3-4x buyin.

I sometimes have thought about the idea of remaining players chipping a little in for the bubble, but in the end, I always come back to the conclusion that the tourney was made to pay x places and not x+1 places.

I thought it was standard to pay the bubble atleast there entry back. I usually agree to something like 1st pays 75% and second the other 25%.

^ this. Plus we're all nice, sociable people for the most part. Even we don't do it every time though.

We do it from time to time here in Fallon (NV) and once in a while when I play in Reno. Depends on the crowd, but it's never 'required'.

Most of the time it has been returning the buy-in to the bubble. Not a significant amount, so it gets considered favorably fairly often.

In my monthly live game we never pay the bubble but sometimes someone will bring a small token gift, a poker book, card protector etc. to give out as a bubble prize

Of the few tourneys I have played in Vegas, someone has always lobbied for the bubble. I think we sat aside $5 or $10 bucks per player left for the bubble and everyone was happy

According to Barry Greenstein:

When Dan made it to the final table of the 1995 world series of poker, he proposed a six-way settlement to the other players. He explained how they would each get enough money that they could invest it and be rich. Chuck Thompson, one of the players[...], rejected the idea and told the other players that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make a million dollars. One by one, as each player got knocked out, Dan tried to sell the idea, even offering investment counseling. There were no takers and eventually Dan came away with the full million.

Paying the bubbly is very common at the casino I play at. We've done this for many years. Depending on the size of the buy in, we try to make it so bubble gets there buy in back - normally that plus a little more.

I've played tourneys in many casinos across MI and it is very common at all of them to do this.

I will note that while it is done the majority of the time, there is an "unwritten rule" that ALL players have to agree to do it and on the amount. Otherwise it is not done. As someone else has mentioned, players are not under any obligation to participate in paying the bubble boy. However, it is considered good etiquette.
