1 day later and my Maestro card was suddenly working again !!
Go figure !
 
The cynical view is that this was a deliberate block on my account to try to force me to use a payment agent (which charges commission of course).   The non-cynical view is that the payment institutions are just crap and it's all out of FTs hands.
 
My advice,  send some explicit emails to the cashier !
