To be clear to be successful you should play both .

Cash games for a steady supply of income and tournaments to get the big wins .

Using sound bankroll management you can make more a lot faster in tourneys . A cash game has smaller wins more often and you can rebuy anytime you want if you get a cooler and lose your stack . But there are far less variables to consider in a cash game .It is a level game the whole way through short stack doesn't affect you as much as rebuy is possible staying alive one more hand does not have the same affect as deep run in tourney .there are a lot more things to consider in a tournament so they take more intelligence to be successful on a consistent basis . It's not one game that makes you successful it's the long term ROI so those who consistently make more in tournaments are bound to be better players than those in cash games as they play everything a cash player plays plus more
