If you can portray yourself to be an aggressive player right from the start, you can own the table and make more moves on some of the players, the best way to do this is to watch the table intently before you sit down and identify the weaker and stronger players before you start to play and push the weakest around, while you are avoiding getting into the action with the strongest.
In a tournament you cannot sit and watch until you decide who and how to play as this will cost you blinds and ultimately the game, but you do have to be cautious to start with, in order to pick up important information from other players.
