When you're just learning to play, or have only ever played one table, adding tables seems really hard and detrimental to your game.  And it is, at first.  That's why you move slowly.  The adjustment is much bigger for your 2nd or 3rd table than it is for your 12th or 20th.  Your brain and reaction time will quickly adjust, and despite myths to the contrary, you *can* learn to actually think about each hand and make plays based on that particular table's dynamics.  Here is where having a HUD is almost a must, but generally any serious online player will have been using a tracker/HUD well before this point anyway.

I typically won't even bother playing if I can't get 6 tables going -- the boredom kills me and I just don't enjoy myself.  And that's playing 6-max; when I played FR I played 12-16 tables.  And as a US player this can sometimes be a challenge with player liquidity being as poor as it is at my favorite site.  Fortunately my preferred game allows me to keep at least 6-8 tables going pretty much constantly once I get the first 6 or so started.
