I do trust my instincts at the table, probably more than I should. There are moments where everything in my head is screaming 'fold' — the math, the pot odds, the hand reading — but something in my gut just pushes me forward. And sometimes it works beautifully. And sometimes... well, let's just say I've had some very expensive lessons.
The funny thing is, looking back at those moments, my instinct wasn't always wrong about sensing something. The problem was the action I chose in response. I'd feel that something was off, but instead of folding I'd call or even raise — like I was trying to fight the feeling instead of listening to it.
I think instinct in poker is actually valuable information. It's your brain processing things faster than your conscious mind can — bet sizing, timing, body language in live games, patterns you've noticed without realizing it. The problem is when emotion hijacks that signal and turns it into a hero call or a bad bluff.
So now I try to ask myself one question when my gut speaks up: am I feeling this because of something real I noticed — or because I just really want to win this pot?
Those two feelings are dangerously similar sometimes.
Still working on telling them apart honestly.😄
