Its because its the bubble, so the players on the table gave the guy a walk so he could cash. Not sure how this plays out rules wise, could be viewed as some kind of collusion. But would be impossible to prove.

They probably became close during the tourney. That happened to me even in online tables, we bacame like tourney friends, even to let me suggest to all fold until we reach ITM, that was a nice friendship money X)
